INTRODUCTION

The Revelation Of Jesus
Through Daniel The Prophet

Daniel 2,  7,  8,  9,  10,  11,  12.

“I saw in the night visions, and, behold,
One like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven,
and came to the Ancient of days . . . There was given Him
dominion, and glory, and a kingdom. . . His dominion is an
everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away . . .”
Daniel 7:13, 14.

—Nations rise and fall.
—History is fulfilled to the letter.
—And the thrilling fact presented by Bible prophecy is that
—soon the last conflict will be over—the last battle fought,
—and the kingdom of Christ will be established—forever!
—Face to face,
the children of earth are to see their Redeemer!
—Long have the pilgrims waited for that blessed day.
—Many eager eyes have been searching the dark skies
—for tokens of the coming morning,
—for the dawn of that eternal day when sin will be destroyed, and everlasting joy and gladness will live in every heart!

—To encourage His pilgrims on their heavenward journey, our Saviour came down to old Babylon, and gave a map of coming events to His faithful prophet Daniel. And He sent Gabriel, the highest angel in heaven, to reveal future guideposts to them, so they would know where they are living in the stream of history.
—The book of Daniel is a chart to show God’s children when the coming of their Lord is near.
—In seven short prophetic chapters, containing 210 verses,
Daniel pens four separate visions, giving details of the rise and fall of world governments from his time, until the setting up of the everlasting kingdom of Jesus Christ.
Page 1

—The visions given to Daniel about the march of nations is one of the most thrilling in sacred history. Many struggles and victories are presented in minute detail.
—To see how the prophetic word has been fulfilled through the centuries, greatly strengthens our faith in the Scriptures.
—And our love for the heavenly Family is increased, as we catch a glimpse of how They are working, so that earth’s inhabitants may choose to become a part of the eternal kingdom if they wish.

The First Outline of History:
—The first of the four outlines comes to us through a dream which God gave to a pagan king named Nebuchadnezzar.
—Daniel was privileged to receive from God the interpretation of this dream and let us thank God, that by His Holy Spirit, we may understand it, too!

Daniel 2:28-45.
THERE IS A GOD IN HEAVEN THAT REVEALETH SECRETS, AND MAKETH KNOWN TO THE KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR WHAT SHALL BE IN THE LATTER DAYS.
—This is a prophecy that includes “the latter days”
—the time we are living in right now.
—These secrets which are revealed, come directly from God in heaven. THY DREAM, AND THE VISIONS OF THY HEAD UPON THY BED, ARE THESE . . .
—Daniel is God’s mouthpiece for King Nebuchadnezzar—and dust THOU, O KING, SAWEST, AND BEHOLD A GREAT IMAGE’ THIS GREAT IMAGE, WHOSE BRIGHTNESS WAS EXCELLENT STOOD BEFORE THEE: AND THE FORM THEREOF WAS TERRIBLE. THIS IMAGE’S HEAD WAS OF FINE GOLD, HIS BREASTS AND HIS ARMS OF SILVER, HIS BELLY AND HIS THIGHS OF BRASS, HIS LEGS OF IRON, HIS FEET PART OF IRON AND PART OF CLAY.
—Make a mental picture of this great statue, made of various metals,
—with “clay” as a part of its foundation!
—And what is the future of this image?
THOU SAWEST TILL THAT A STONE WAS CUT OUT WITHOUT HANDS, WHICH SMOTE THE IMAGE UPON HIS FEET THAT WERE OF IRON AND CLAY, AND BRAKE THEM TO PIECES.
THEN WAS THE IRON, THE CLAY, THE BRASS, THE SILVER, AND THE GOLD, BROKEN TO PIECES TOGETHER,
—The minerals and elements of the statue lay in one big heap.
—But they were not together long! They were blown away
AND BECAME LIKE THE CHAFF OF THE SUMMER THRESHING FLOORS; AND THE WIND CARRIED THEM AWAY, THAT NO PLACE WAS FOUND FOR THEM:
Page 2

AND THE STONE THAT SMOTE THE IMAGE BECAME A GREAT MOUNTAIN, AND FILLED THE WHOLE EARTH.
—“The dream of the great image, opening before Nebuchadnezzar events reaching to the close of time, had been given that he might understand the part he was to act in the world’s history, and the relation that his kingdom should sustain to the kingdom of heaven.” PK 503. (Emphasis added)
THIS IS THE DREAM; AND WE WILL TELL THE INTERPRETATION THEREOF BEFORE THE KING.
—Picture God’s young witness, as he stands before the greatest king of the greatest nation on earth. Heavenly messengers, sent from One greater than he, were by Daniel’s side.
THOU, O KING, ART A KING OF KINGS:
—Babylon was “the most powerful empire the sun has ever shone upon.” SL 27.
FOR THE GOD OF HEAVEN HATH GIVEN THEE A KINGDOM, POWER, AND STRENGTH, AND GLORY.
—Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar that his glorious kingdom —and the strength of his body and mind— were gifts from the God of heaven.
AND WHERESOEVER THE CHILDREN OF MEN DWELL, THE BEASTS OF THE FIELD AND THE FOWLS OF THE HEAVEN HATH HE GIVEN INTO THINK HAND, AND HATH MADE THEE RULER OVER THEM ALL.
—And now Daniel refers to the image Nebuchadnezzar had seen in his dream.
THOU ART THIS HEAD OF GOLD.
—The head of the image rightly symbolized the golden empire of Babylon, with its luxurious capitol,
—its hanging gardens and exquisite palaces,
—its moated walls and traversing river.
AND AFTER THEE SHALL ARISE ANOTHER KINGDOM INFERIOR TO THEE,
—The kingdom of Medo-Persia followed Babylon in 539 B.C. The same night the handwriting on the wall appeared, Darius, the Mede, took the Babylonian kingdom from Belshazzar. See Daniel 5:24-31.
—The Medo-Persian kingdom was represented—on the great image by the arms and chest of silver.
AND ANOTHER THIRD KINGDOM OF BRASS, WHICH SHALL BEAR RULE OVER ALL THE EARTH.
—The brass of the great image—the belly and thighs—were a symbol of the kingdom of Greece.
—Alexander the Great overcame the Medes and the Persians in the year 331 B.C., in the battle of Arbela.
—Alexander died shortly after his great victory, and the Grecian kingdom was divided among the four leading generals.
—What world power overcame the Grecian governments?
AND THE FOURTH KINGDOM SHALL BE STRONG AS IRON:
—The legs of the statue represent the iron monarchy of Rome.
Page 3

—The Roman empire began making conquests against the divided Grecian kingdom, and by the year 168 B.C., at the battle of Pydna, it was clearly seen that Rome was the strongest world power.
—There were additional victories in 146 B.C. and 30 B.C., when the last of the Grecian governments came under Roman domination
FORASMUCH AS IRON BREAKETH IN PIECES AND SUBDUETH ALL THINGS:
—as the strongest element in the image
AND AS IRON THAT BREAKETH ALL THESE, SHALL IT BREAK IN PIECES AND BRUISE.
—The aggressive and irresistible Roman armies conquered everything in their pathway, even destroying whole cities, (as Corinth—in 146 B.C.)
—A few centuries later, however, barbarian tribes began to invade Roman territory, and the Roman empire did not remain strong.
AND WHEREAS THOU
      —Nebuchadnezzar
SAWEST
—in thy dream of the great image
THE FEET AND TOES, PART OF POTTERS’ CLAY, AND PART OF IRON, THE KINGDOM SHALL BE DIVIDED.
—The Roman empire was to be divided into ten divisions.
—Yet the influence of the Roman element was to be felt. The toes were still part iron.
BUT THERE SHALL BE IN IT THE STRENGTH OF THE IRON, FORASMUCH AS THOU SAWEST THE IRON MIXED WITH MIREY CLAY.
—Some of the ten divisions which developed would be strong, and others weak.
AND AS THE TOES OF THE FEET WERE PART OF IRON, AND PART OF CLAY, SO THE KINGDOM
      —(singular)
SHALL BE PARTLY STRONG
      —with the same “iron” characteristics
AND PARTLY BROKEN.
      —fragile, or brittle.
AND WHEREAS THOU SAWEST IRON MIXED WITH MIREY CLAY, THEY SHALL MINGLE THEMSELVES WITH THE SEED
OF MEN:
—by intermarriage among the leading rulers of the nations
BUT THEY SHALL NOT CLEAVE ONE TO ANOTHER,
      —they shall not agree
EVEN AS IRON IS NOT MIXED WITH CLAY.
—At one time Queen Victoria was known as the Grandmother of Europe, because she was related to so many of the rulers.
—But God’s Word has held fast through the centuries!
—“. . . They shall not cleave one to another . . .” (Emphasis added.)
—After the Roman empire was divided, it remains divided. And it will always remain divided because that is what God’s Word says!
Page 4

—Many strong and brilliant generals have tried to unite the divided kingdom — Charlemagne, Louis XIV, Napoleon, The Kaiser, Hitler, and others. But they were attacking a barrier stronger than human armies. God says — iron and clay will not “cleave one to another.”
—“We need not, and cannot, expect union among the nations of the earth. Our position in the image of Nebuchadnezzar is represented by the toes, in a divided state, and of a crumbling material, that will not hold together. Prophecy shows us that the great day of God is right upon us. It hasteth greatly.” 1T 361.

—The mixture of the iron and the clay also has a deeper meaning:
—“The mingling of churchcraft and statecraft is represented by the iron and the clay. This union is weakening all the power of the churches. This investing the church with the power of the state will bring evil results.” 4BC 1168, 1169. (Study Revelation 17:10, in Chapter 4. (Emphasis added.)

—What will be the next world kingdom? —and when?
AND IN THE DAYS OF THESE KINGS
—the divisions of the Roman empire,
—and the mingling of churchcraft with statecraft,
SHALL THE GOD OF HEAVEN SET UP A KINGDOM, WHICH SHALL NEVER BE DESTROYED.
—This is when Jesus will be revealed to His people—face to face!
AND THE KINGDOM SHALL NOT BE LEFT TO OTHER PEOPLE, BUT IT SHALL BREAK IN PIECES AND CONSUME ALL THESE KINGDOMS,
      —and all earthly governments
AND IT SHALL STAND FOR EVER.
—“. . . The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever.” Revelation 11:15.
FORASMUCH AS THOU SAWEST THAT THE STONE
      —which represents God’s kingdom
WAS CUT OUT OF THE MOUNTAIN WITHOUT HANDS, AND THAT IT BRAKE IN PIECES THE IRON, THE BRASS, THE CLAY, THE SILVER, AND THE GOLD:
      —all earthly kingdoms and alliances
THE GREAT GOD HATH MADE KNOWN TO THE KING WHAT SHALL COME TO PASS HEREAFTER:
—“Every nation that has come upon the stage of action has been permitted to occupy its place on the earth, that the fact might be determined whether it would fulfill the purposes of the Watcher and the Holy One. Prophecy has traced the rise and progress of the world’s great empires—Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome. With each of these, as with the nations of less power, history has repeated itself. Each has had its period of test; each has failed, its glory faded’ its power departed. . . .
—“From the rise and fall of nations as made plain in the books of
Page 5

Daniel and the Revelation, we need to learn how worthless is mere outward and worldly glory. Babylon, —with all its power and magnificence, the like of which our world has never since beheld,
—power and magnificence which to the people of that day seemed so stable and enduring, — how completely has it passed away. As ‘the flower of the grass,’ it has perished. James 1:10. So perished the Medo-Persian kingdom, and the kingdoms of Grecia and Rome. And so perishes all that has not God for its foundation. Only that which is bound up with His purpose, and expresses His character can endure. His principles are the only steadfast things our world knows. PK 535, 548. (Emphasis added.)
AND THE DREAM IS CERTAIN, AND THE INTERPRETATION THEREOF SURE.
—“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the Day Star arise in your hearts.” 2Peter1:19. (Emphasis added.)

Daniel 7-12.
—“Honored by men with the responsibilities of state and with the secrets of kingdoms bearing universal sway, Daniel was honored by God as His ambassador, and was given many revelations of the mysteries of ages to come. His wonderful prophecies, as recorded by him in chapters 7 to 12 of the book bearing his name, were not fully understood even by the prophet himself; but before his life labors closed, he was given the blessed assurance that ‘at the end of the days’—in the closing period of this world’s history—he would again be permitted to stand in his lot and place . . .
—“As we near the close of this world’s history, the prophecies recorded by Daniel demand our special attention, as they relate to the very time in which we are living. With them should be linked the teachings of the last book of the New Testament Scriptures. Satan has led many to believe that the prophetic portions of the writings of Daniel and of John the revelator cannot be understood. But the promise is plain that special blessing will accompany the study of these prophecies. ‘The wise shall understand’ (verse 10), was spoken of the visions of Daniel that were to be unsealed in the latter days . . .” PK 547, 548. (Emphasis added.)

—Let us turn to the prophecies which are recorded by Daniel in chapters 7 to 12. In these chapters we will find three more historical outlines.
—We are privileged to trace the history of nations down through the centuries—and verify that the prophetic word does not fail!
—The setting up of the kingdom of Christ, after the fall of earthly kingdoms, is also the message of the three remaining outlines of history which Daniel records.
—Let us humbly ask God to give us of His Spirit to understand that portion of His word which it is time for us to comprehend.
Page 6

The Second Outline of History:

Daniel 7.
IN THE FIRST YEAR OF BELSHAZZAR KING OF BABYLON
      —grandson of Nebuchadnezzar
DANIEL HAD A DREAM AND VISIONS OF HIS HEAD UPON HIS BED: THEN HE WROTE THE DREAM, AND TOLD THE SUM OF THE MATTERS.
—Thank God for His enlightenment in the timely book of Daniel!
DANIEL SPAKE AND SAID, I SAW IN MY VISION BY NIGHT, AND, BEHOLD, THE FOUR WINDS OF THE HEAVEN STROVE UPON THE GREAT SEA. AND FOUR GREAT BEASTS CAME UP FROM THE SEA, DIVERSE ONE FROM ANOTHER.
—“The great kingdoms that have ruled the world were presented to the prophet Daniel as beasts of prey, rising when ‘the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.’ Daniel 7:2. In Revelation 17 an angel explained that waters represent ‘peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.’ Revelation 17:15. Winds are a symbol of strife. The four winds of heaven striving upon the great sea represent the terrible scenes of conquest and revolution by which kingdoms have attained to power.” GC 439, 440. (Emphasis added.)
—“Earthly governments prevail by physical force; they maintain their dominion by war . . .” COL 77.
—As we read further into Daniel 7, we will find that these four beasts are identical with the four nations which are symbolized the great image Nebuchadnezzar saw in his dream.
—More details are given us regarding Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome.
—The ten toes of the image are parallel to the ten horns on the fourth beast, and represent the divisions of the Roman empire.
—Let us watch with Daniel as the first great beast rises out of the sea.
THE FIRST WAS LIKE A LION, AND HAD EAGLE’S WINGS.
      —This beast represents Babylon.
—The lion is the king of beasts, and the eagle is the king of birds.
—God told Nebuchadnezzar, “Thou, O king, art a king of kings.” Daniel 2:37.
—On many Babylonian objects of art, there is a winged lion.
AND I BEHELD TILL THE WINGS THEREOF WERE PLUCKED,
—Daniel watched as Babylon’s power diminished
AND IT WAS LIFTED UP FROM THE EARTH, AND MADE STAND UPON THE FEET AS A MAN,
—the fighting spirit of conquest disappeared
AND A MAN’S HEART WAS GIVEN TO IT.
—After the death of Nebuchadnezzar, several less powerful rulers sat on the throne in rapid succession.
—At the drunken feast, Belshazzar was only a teenager as the hand on the wall pronounced the doom of Babylon. See Daniel 5:17-31.
—“. . . Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.” Daniel 5:27.
Page 7

—As Daniel watches the prophetic panorama of history symbolized before his eyes, he is shown three more beasts of prey.
AND BEHOLD ANOTHER BEAST, A SECOND, LIKE TO A BEAR,
      —representing Medo-Persia
AND IT RAISED UP ITSELF ON ONE SIDE,
—One side of the beast was higher than the other. Although the Persians became the dominant power after the beginning, the Medes were not treated as inferiors, but as confederates
AND IT HAD THREE RIBS IN THE MOUTH OF IT BETWEEN THE TEETH OF IT: AND THEY SAID THUS UNTO IT, ARISE DEVOUR MUCH FLESH.
—The three powers conquered by the armies of Medo-Persia were Babylon, Lydia, and Egypt.
AFTER THIS I BEHELD, AND LO ANOTHER,
      —the third beast—
LIKE A LEOPARD, WHICH HAD UPON THE BACK OF IT FOUR WINGS OF A FOWL;
—This beast symbolizes the Grecian kingdom, and finds its parallel in the belly and thighs of the great image.
—One of the characteristics of the leopard beast is swiftness. With four wings added, the leopard would be even swifter.
—Alexander the Great, with his Macedonian army, conquered the major part of the civilized world in less than a decade. He was only 25 years old when he defeated the Persians at Arbela in 331 B.C.
THE BEAST HAD ALSO FOUR HEADS; AND DOMINION WAS GIVEN TO IT.
—Alexander the Great died in 323 B.C., and the large Grecian empire was divided among his four generals.
—Seleucus took the eastern part of the empire; and
          —Cassander went to the west.
—Ptolemy became the king of the south; and
—Lysimachus, the king of the north.
AFTER THIS I SAW IN THE NIGHT VISIONS, AND BEHOLD A FOURTH BEAST, DREADFUL AND TERRIBLE, AND STRONG EXCEEDINGLY;
—This dreadful beast represents the iron kingdom of Rome, that was to subdue “all things,” and “break in pieces and bruise.” Daniel 2:40.
AND IT HAD GREAT IRON TEETH:
IT DEVOURED AND BRAKE IN PIECES,
AND STAMPED THE RESIDUE WITH THE FEET OF IT:
AND IT WAS DIVERSE FROM ALL THE BEASTS THAT WERE BEFORE IT; AND IT HAD TEN HORNS.
—This great Roman beast, with its horn-powers, was to cover the span of time from the world kingdom of Greece, until Jesus, the Son of God, would receive “an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away,”
—and a “kingdom . . . which shall not be destroyed.” Daniel 7:14.
—The setting up of Christ’s kingdom, in Daniel 7, parallels the stone which smote the image of Daniel 2, and became a great mountain.
Page 8

The Ten Horns of the Fourth Beast—and the Little Horn:
—Now, in Daniel’s second outline of world history, he is given more details about the ten divisions of the Roman empire.
—What do the ten horns represent? Daniel 7:24:
AND THE TEN HORNS OUT OF THIS KINGDOM ARE TEN KINGS THAT SHALL ARISE.
—The Roman empire came to be divided into ten monarchies:
          —The Anglo-Saxons and Franks;
          —the Alemanni and Lombards;
          —the Suevi and Burgundians;
          —the Visigoths and Heruli;
          —the Ostrogoths, and the Vandals.
I CONSIDERED THE HORNS, AND, BEHOLD, THERE CAME UP AMONG THEM ANOTHER LITTLE HORN, BEFORE WHOM THERE WERE THREE OF THE FIRST HORNS PLUCKED UP BY THE ROOTS:
—“‘Out of the ruins of political Rome, arose the great moral Empire in the ‘giant form’ of the Roman Church.’ (A. C. Flick, The Rise of the Mediaeval Church [1900], p. 150).” 4BC 826.
—“Whatever Roman elements the barbarians and Arians left . . . were . . . put under the protection of the Bishop of Rome, who was the chief person there after the Emperor’s disappearance . . . The Roman Church in this way privately pushed itself into the place of the Roman World-Empire, of which it is the actual continuation; the empire has not perished, but has only undergone a transformation . . . That is no mere ‘clever remark,’ but the recognition of the true state of the matter historically, and the most appropriate and fruitful way of describing the character of this Church. It still governs the nations . . . It is a political creation, and as imposing as a World-Empire, because the continuation of the Roman Empire. The Pope, who calls himself ‘King’ and ‘Pontifex Maximus,’ is Caesar’s successor’ (Adolf Harnack, What is Christianity? [New York; G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1903], pp. 269, 270, italics in the original).” 4BC 846.
—“‘Under the Roman Empire the popes had no temporal powers. But when the Roman Empire had disintegrated and its place had been taken by a number of rude, barbarous kingdoms, the Roman Catholic church not only became independent of the states in religious affairs but dominated secular affairs as well . . .’ (Carl Conrad Eckhardt, The Papacy and World-Affairs [1937], p. 1).” 4BC 826.
—The “little horn” power—the Roman Catholic Church which was the continuing force of the Roman Empire, was to uproot three of the ten horns on the beast.
—Only seven horns remained—along with this tattle horn. (The Heruli, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths were destroyed.)
—In 538 Rome was freed from the influence of the Arians. The papacy was able to develop further without their opposition.
AND, BEHOLD, IN THIS HORN WERE EYES LIKE THE EYES OF A MAN, AND A MOUTH SPEAKING GREAT THINGS.
Page 9

The Judgment Was Set, and the Books Were Opened:
—Daniel’s attention is now removed, for a moment, from the rise and fall of human powers, and he looks into the heavens above.
—It is the time of the great pre-advent, investigative judgment!
I BEHELD TILL THE THRONES WERE CAST DOWN,
—placed in position in the second apartment of the heavenly temple
AND THE ANCIENT OF DAYS
      —God the Father
DID SIT, WHOSE GARMENT WAS WHITE AS SNOW, AND THE HAIR OF HIS HEAD LIKE THE PURE WOOL: HIS THRONE WAS LIKE THE FIERY FLAME, AND HIS WHEELS AS BURNING FIRE.
—Revelation 4 gives a further description of God’s glorious throne.
A FIERY STREAM ISSUED AND CAME FORTH FROM BEFORE HIM.
THOUSAND THOUSANDS MINISTERED UNTO HIM, AND TEN
THOUSAND TIMES TEN THOUSAND STOOD BEFORE HIM:
—These are His angels. Revelation 5:11.
THE JUDGMENT WAS SET, AND THE BOOKS WERE OPENED.
—The judgment is to precede the second advent of our Lord
—for when He comes He brings His reward with Him: “And, behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:12. (Emphasis added.)
—The work of the pre-advent judgment, when the books are opened, is described more fully in Chapter 3—“The Vision of the Heavenly Sanctuary.

The Final End of the Four Beasts:
I BEHELD THEN BECAUSE OF THE VOICE OF THE GREAT WORDS WHICH THE HORN SPAKE:
—“For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” Matthew 12:37.
I BEHELD EVEN TILL THE BEAST WAS SLAIN, AND HIS BODY DESTROYED, AND GIVEN TO THE BURNING FLAME.
—Describing this fire, which is a part of the seventh plague, and the battle of Armageddon, John tells us:
—“And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a Lake of fire burning with brimstone.” Revelation 19:20. (Study Chapter 6, on The Battle of Armageddon.)
AS CONCERNING THE REST OF THE BEASTS,
—the lion, the bear, and the leopard
THEY HAD THEIR DOMINION TAKEN AWAY:
—one by one, as their kingdoms fell
YET THEIR LIVES WERE PROLONGED FOR A SEASON AND TIME.
      —after their power was removed.
Page 10

Jesus Receives His Everlasting Kingdom:
—As Daniel watches, in vision, he sees Jesus Himself.
I SAW IN THE NIGHT VISIONS, AND, BEHOLD ONE LIKE THE SON OF MAN
      —our great High Priest
CAME WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN, AND CAME TO THE ANCIENT OF DAYS,
—where His Father was seated on the judgment throne in the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary
AND THEY
      —the angels
BROUGHT HIM NEAR BEFORE HIM.
—“Then a cloudy chariot, with wheels like flaming fire, surrounded by angels, came to where Jesus was. He stepped into the chariot and was borne to the holiest, where the Father sat. Then I beheld Jesus, a great High Priest, standing before the Father.” EW 55.
—“The coming of Christ here described [Daniel 7:13, 14] is not His second coming to the earth. He comes to the Ancient of Days in heaven to receive dominion and glory and a kingdom, which will be given Him at the close of His work as a mediator.” GC 480. (Emphasis added.)
—At this coming of Christ, He passes from the first apartment of the heavenly sanctuary to the second. And in the most holy place, after He has finished His intercessory work as our High Priest, He is crowned King!
—This coronation takes place just before He returns the second time in the clouds of glory.
AND THERE WAS GIVEN HIM DOMINION, AND GLORY, AND A KINGDOM, THAT ALL PEOPLE, NATIONS, AND LANGUAGES, SHOULD SERVE HIM:
—How long is this new worldwide kingdom to remain in power?
HIS DOMINION IS AN EVERLASTING DOMINION WHICH SHALL NOT PASS AWAY, AND HIS KINGDOM THAT WHICH SHALL NOT BE DESTROYED.
—The setting up of the eternal kingdom, with Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords, is the message of Daniel 7, as well as of Daniel 2.
—The redeemed of all ages will then know their Redeemer face to face!
—This will be the fulfillment of the promise made to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden—the promise of eternal life.
—This is the grand event which all of Christ’s followers have looked forward to, ever since He told His little flock:
—“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, behave also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:1-3. (Emphasis added.)
—“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” Titus 2:13. (Emphasis added.)
Page 11

Further Details on the Beasts and the Little Horn:
—Daniel’s attention turns again to the four beasts he saw coming up’ out of the sea. As he thought about them, and the horns on the fourth beast, he was distressed. He wanted to know the meaning of the dream.
I DANIEL WAS GRIEVED IN MY SPIRIT IN THE MIDST OF MY BODY, AND THE VISIONS OF MY HEAD TROUBLED ME. I CAME NEAR UNTO ONE OF THEM THAT STOOD BY.
—probably the same angel, Gabriel, who was talking with Daniel later, (Daniel 8:16; see DA 99.)
AND ASKED HIM THE TRUTH OF ALL THIS.
—What do the beasts and the horns represent?
SO HE TOLD ME, AND MADE ME KNOW THE INTERPRETATION OF THE THINGS.
—In two sentences the angel summarizes the vision:
THESE GREAT BEASTS, WHICH ARE FOUR, ARE FOUR KINGS, WHICH SHALL ARISE OUT OF THE EARTH. BUT THE SAINTS OF THE MOST HIGH SHALL TAKE THE KINGDOM, AND POSSESS THE KINGDOM FOR EVER, EVEN FOR EVER AND EVER.
—After earthly kingdoms pass away, God’s people will be forever with their Lord in His eternal kingdom.
—But Daniel is specifically concerned with the “fourth beast, dreadful and terrible,” which had the horns.
THEN I WOULD KNOW THE TRUTH OF THE FOURTH BEAST.
      —the Roman kingdom
WHICH WAS DIVERSE FROM ALL THE OTHERS, EXCEEDING DREADFUL, WHOSE TEETH WERE OF IRON, AND HIS NAILS
OF BRASS; WHICH DEVOURED, BRAKE IN PIECES, AND STAMPED THE RESIDUE WITH HIS FEET;
—The Roman conquests were especially cruel. Many were made slaves. Destruction lay in the pathway of the Roman armies.
—Also, severe persecutions came to those who dared stand up for their religious convictions:
“Great numbers sealed their testimony with their blood. Noble and slave, rich and poor, learned and ignorant, were alike slain without mercy. These persecutions, beginning under Nero about the time of the martyrdom of Paul, continued with greater or less fury for centuries . . . They were condemned as rebels against the empire, as foes of religion, and pests to society. Great numbers were thrown to wild beasts or burned alive in the amphitheaters. . . Wherever they sought refuge, the followers of Christ were hunted like beasts of prey. They were forced to seek concealment in desolate and solitary places.” GC 40.
AND OF THE TEN HORNS THAT WERE IN HIS HEAD,
—which were a symbol of the same ten kingdoms of the great image—
AND OF THE OTHER WHICH CAME UP,
—the little horn which grew powerful
AND BEFORE WHOM THREE FELL: EVEN OF THAT HORN
Page 12

THAT HAD EYES, AND A MOUTH THAT SPAKE VERY GREAT THINGS, WHOSE LOOK WAS MORE STOUT THAN HIS FELLOWS.
—What was this outstanding horn power to do? Watch with Daniel:
I BEHELD, AND THE SAME HORN MADE WAR WITH THE SAINTS, AND PREVAILED AGAINST THEM;
—How long was he to work against God’s people?
UNTIL THE ANCIENT OF DAYS CAME, AND JUDGMENT WAS GIVEN TO THE SAINTS OF THE MOST HIGH; AND THE TIME CAME THAT THE SAINTS POSSESSED THE KINGDOM.
—The little horn power, which grew out of the Roman kingdom, was to continue until the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom.
—The angel continues explaining more about the fourth beast:
THEN HE SAID, THE FOURTH BEAST SHALL BE THE FOURTH KINGDOM UPON EARTH, WHICH SHALL BE DIVERSE FROM ALL KINGDOMS, AND SHALL DEVOUR THE WHOLE EARTH, AND SHALL TREAD IT DOWN, AND BREAK IT IN PIECES. AND THE TEN HORNS OUT OF THIS KINGDOM ARE TEN KINGS THAT SHALL ARISE:
—the same as the ten toes of the great image
AND ANOTHER SHALL RISE AFTER THEM; AND HE SHALL BE DIVERSE FROM THE FIRST, AND HE SHALL SUBDUE THREE KINGS.
—The angel is repeating the same details as in Daniel 7:8, with additional information.
—After subduing the kingdoms of the Heruli, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths, what else was the little horn power to do?
AND HE
—the little horn that subdues three other horns
SHALL SPEAK GREAT WORDS AGAINST THE MOST HIGH, AND SHALL WEAR OUT THE SAINTS OF THE MOST HIGH, AND THINK TO CHANGE TIMES AND LAWS:
—These are three of the characteristics of the little horn power that grew on the Roman beast.
—“The apostle Paul, in his second letter to the Thessalonians, foretold the great apostasy which would result in the establishment of the papal power. He declared that the day of Christ should not come, ‘except there comes a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, strewing himself that he is God.’ And furthermore, the apostle warns his brethren that ‘the mystery of iniquity cloth already work. ’”2Thess. 2:3, 4, 7. Even at that early date he saw, creeping into the church, errors that would prepare the way for the development of the Papacy.
—“Little by little, at first in stealth and silence and then more openly as it increased in strength and gained control of the minds of men, the mystery of iniquity carried forward its deceptive and blasphemous work. Almost imperceptibly the customs of heathenism
Page 13

found their way into the Christian church . . . The nominal conversion of Constantine in the early part of the fourth century caused great rejoicing; and the world, arrayed in robes of righteousness, walked into the church. Now the work of corruption rapidly progressed. Paganism, while appearing to be vanquished, became the conqueror. Her spirit controlled the church. Her doctrines, ceremonies, and superstitions were incorporated into the faith and worship of the professed followers of Christ . . .
—“Prophecy had declared that the Papacy was to ‘think to change times and laws.’ Dan. 7:25. This work it was not slow to attempt. To afford converts from heathenism a substitute for the worship of idols, and thus to promote their nominal acceptance of Christianity, the adoration of images and relics was gradually introduced into the Christian worship. The decree of a general council finally established this system of popish idolatry. To complete the sacrilegious work, Rome presumed to expunge from the law of God the second commandment, forbidding image worship, and to divide the tenth commandment, in order to preserve the number.
—“The spirit of concession to paganism opened the way for a still further disregard of Heaven’s authority. Satan tampered with the fourth commandment also, and essayed to set aside the ancient Sabbath, the day which God had blessed and sanctified, and in its stead to exalt the festival observed by the heathen as ‘the venerable day of the sun.’” SR 326-329. (Emphasis added.)
—“Royal edicts, general councils, and church ordinances sustained by secular power were the steps by which the pagan festival attained its position of honor in the Christian world. The first public measure enforcing Sunday observance was the law enacted by Constantine. (A.D. 321; see Appendix.) GC 574. (Emphasis added.)
—“In the beginning, God gave His law to mankind as a means of attaining happiness and eternal life. Satan’s only hope of thwarting the purpose of God is to lead men and women to disobey this law, and his constant effort has been to misrepresent its teachings and belittle its importance. His master stroke has been an attempt to change the law itself, so as to lead men to violate its precepts while professing to obey it . . .
—“During the Christian dispensation, the great enemy of man’s happiness has made the Sabbath of the fourth commandment an object of special attack. Satan says
I will work at cross purposes with God.
I will empower my followers to set aside God’s memorial, the seventh-day Sabbath.
Thus I will show the world that the day sanctified and blessed by God has been changed. That day shall not live in the minds of the people.
I will obliterate the memory of it.
I will place in its stead a day that does not bear the credentials of God, a day that cannot be a sign between God and His people.
Page 14

I will lead those who accept this day to place upon it the sanctity that God placed upon the seventh day.
Through my vicegerent, I will exalt myself. The first day will be extolled, and the Protestant world will receive this spurious sabbath as genuine.
Through the nonobservance of the Sabbath that God instituted, I will bring His law into contempt.
The words, ‘A sign between Me and you throughout your generations,’ [Exodus 31:13.] I will make to serve on the side of my sabbath.
Thus the world will become mine. I will be the ruler of the earth, the prince of the world.
I will so control the minds under my power that God’s Sabbath shall be a special object of contempt.
A sign? I will make the observance of the seventh day a sign of disloyalty to the authorities of earth.
Human laws will be made so stringent that men and women will not dare to observe the seventh-day Sabbath. For fear of wanting food and clothing, they will join with the world in transgressing God’s law.
“The earth will be wholly under my dominion.” PK 178, 183, 184. (Emphasis added.)
—These are Satan’s words. Can’t you hear him in general council explaining his tactics to his army of angels?
—They accept his plan, and go out to influence the minds of men.
      —Will you accept it, too?

—The little horn power is assigned a time limit by God.
AND THEY SHALL BE GIVEN INTO HIS HANDS UNTIL A TIME AND TIMES AND THE DIVIDING OF TIME.
—How are we to calculate prophetic time?
—A “time” in Bible prophecy is one year. See Daniel 4:16, 32.
—One time, two times and a half a time = 3½ years.
—This prophecy is to have a literal fulfillment in time, and also a prophetic fulfillment.
—How long is a day in prophetic time?
          —“. . . I have appointed thee each day for a year.” Ezekiel 4:6. See Numbers 14:34; GC 324.
—A prophetic month contains 30 days.
—A prophetic year would therefore contain 360 days.
—According to the prophecy given to Daniel, then, the little horn power was to have a special period of activity for 1260 days, which is the equivalent of 3½ years in literal time, and 1260 years in prophetic time.
—“In the sixth century the papacy had become firmly established. Its seat of power was fixed in the imperial city, and the bishop of Rome was declared to be the head over the entire church. Paganism had given place to the papacy. The dragon had given to the beast ‘his power, and his seat, and great authority.’ Revelation 13:2. (See
Page 15

Appendix.) And now began the 1260 years of papal oppression foretold in the prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation. Daniel 7:25; Revelation 13:5-7. Christians were forced to choose either to yield their integrity and accept the papal ceremonies and worship, or to wear away their lives in dungeons, or to suffer death by the rack, the fagot, or the headsman’s ax. Now were fulfilled the words of Jesus: ‘Ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for My name’s sake.’ Luke 21:16, 17. Persecution opened upon the faithful with greater fury than ever before, and the world became a vast battlefield. For hundreds of years the church of Christ found refuge in seclusion and obscurity. Thus says the prophet: ‘The woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.’ Revelation 12:6.
—“The accession of the Roman Church to power marked the beginning of the Dark Ages. As her power increased, the darkness deepened. Faith was transferred from Christ, the true foundation, to the pope of Rome. Instead of trusting in the Son of God for forgiveness of sins and for eternal salvation, the people looked to the pope, and to the priests and prelates to whom he delegated authority. They were taught that the pope was their earthly mediator and that none could approach God except through him; and, further, that he stood in the place of God to them and was therefore to be implicitly obeyed. A deviation from his requirements was sufficient cause for the severest punishment to be visited upon the bodies and souls of the offenders. Thus, the minds of the people were turned away from God to fallible, erring, and cruel men, nay, more, to the prince of darkness himself, who exercised his power through them. Sin was disguised in a garb of sanctity. When the Scriptures are suppressed, and man comes to regard himself as supreme, we need look only for fraud, deception, and debasing iniquity. With the elevation of human laws and traditions was manifest the corruption that ever results from setting aside the law of God.” GC 54, 55. (Emphasis added.)
—What took place at the close of the 1260 years of prophetic time?
—“‘Power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.’ And, says the prophet, ‘I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death.’ And again: ‘He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword.’ The forty and two months are the same as the ‘time and times and the dividing of time,’ three years and a half, or 1260 days, of Daniel 7 — the time during which the papal power was to oppress God’s people. This period . . . began with the supremacy of the papacy, A.D. 538, and terminated in 1798. At that time the pope was made captive by the French army, the papal power received its deadly wound, and the prediction was fulfilled, ‘He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity.’” GC 439.
Page 16

BUT THE JUDGMENT SHALL SIT,
—God assures Daniel that He still rules in the heavens, and will reveal Himself when the time schedules are over, and every man had the opportunity of choosing which law he will keep.
—“The world is not without a ruler. The program of coming events is in the hands of the Lord. The Majesty of heaven has the destiny of nations as well as the concerns of His church in His own charge.” 5T 753. (Emphasis added.)
AND THEY SHALL TAKE AWAY HIS DOMINION, TO CONSUME AND TO DESTROY IT UNTO THE END.
—“For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be . . . The wicked shall perish . . . They shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.” Psalm 37:9, 10, 20.
AND THE KINGDOM AND DOMINION, AND THE GREATNESS OF THE KINGDOM UNDER THE WHOLE HEAVEN, SHALL BE GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE OF THE SAINTS OF THE MOST HIGH, WHOSE KINGDOM IS AN EVERLASTING KINGDOM, AND ALL DOMINIONS SHALL SERVE AND OBEY HIM.
—The beautiful theme of the book of Daniel is presented again. God wishes Daniel—and all of us—to know that His eternal kingdom will follow the strife and confusion of earthly powers.
—His people are to wait patiently until the long night of sin is over, and God’s great time-clock points to the deliverance of His people, and the ushering in of His eternal kingdom.
HITHERTO IS THE END OF THE MATTER.
—The vision given to Daniel in the first year of the reign of king Belshazzar, has come to an end.
AS FOR ME DANIEL, MY COGITATIONS MUCH TROUBLED ME, AND MY COUNTENANCE CHANGED IN ME: BUT I KEPT THE MATTER IN MY HEART.
—Daniel continued to ponder over the vision which God had entrusted to him.

The Third Outline of History:

Daniel 8.
IN THE THIRD YEAR OF THE REIGN OF KING BELSHAZZAR A VISION APPEARED UNTO ME,
—two years after the vision recorded in Daniel 7.
EVEN UNTO ME DANIEL, AFTER THAT WHICH APPEARED UNTO ME AT THE FIRST.
—During these two years, Daniel had kept “the matter” in his heart. The previous vision was troubling him, and he was greatly desiring further understanding from God.
AND I SAW IN A VISION, AND I WAS BY THE RIVER OF ULAI. THEN I LIFTED UP MINE EYES, AND SAW, AND, BEHOLD, THERE STOOD BEFORE THE RIVER A RAM WHICH HAD TWO HORNS:
Page 17

      —Daniel 8:20 tells us:
THE RAM WHICH THOU SAWEST HAVING TWO HORNS ARE THE KINGS OF MEDIA AND PERSIA.
—This is the kingdom which was to follow Babylon.
—The ram, representing Medo-Persia, is the same
—as the bear, in Daniel 7, and
—as the arms and chest of silver in the image of Daniel 2:
AND THE TWO HORNS WERE HIGH; BUT ONE WAS HIGHER THAN THE OTHER, AND THE HIGHER CAME UP LAST.
—The Persian horn was higher than the Median horn. But the Medes came into power before the Persians.
      —Daniel continues:
I SAW THE RAM PUSHING WESTWARD, AND NORTHWARD, AND SOUTHWARD;
      —he came from the east
SO THAT NO BEASTS MIGHT STAND BEFORE HIM, NEITHER WAS THEIR ANY THAT COULD DELIVER OUT OF HIS HAND; BUT HE DID ACCORDING TO HIS WILL, AND BECAME GREAT.
—The Medo-Persian empire was much larger than Babylon. Babylon was conquered in 539 B.C., and Lydia eight years earlier. Egypt and Ethiopia were overcome in 525 B.C. and the Scythians fell to their armies in 513 B.C.
AND AS I WAS CONSIDERING, BEHOLD, AN HE GOAT CAME FROM THE WEST ON THE FACE OF THE WHOLE EARTH,
—Alexander the Great, with his Grecian army
AND TOUCHED NOT THE GROUND:
      —he was coming so fast.
AND THE GOAT HAD A NOTABLE HORN BETWEEN HIS EYES.
—which represented the young conquering general.
          —Verse 21 says:
AND THE ROUGH GOAT IS THE KING OF GRECIA: AND THE GREAT HORN THAT IS BETWEEN HIS EYES IS THE FIRST KING. AND HE
      —the goat representing Greece
CAME TO THE RAM THAT HAD THE TWO HORNS,
—one representing the Medes, and the other the Persians
WHICH I HAD SEEN STANDING BEFORE THE RIVER, AND RAN UNTO HIM IN THE FURY OF HIS POWER.
      —The Grecians attacked the Medo-Persians.
AND I SAW HIM COME CLOSE UNTO THE RAM, AND HE WAS MOVED WITH CHOLER AGAINST HIM, AND SMOTE THE RAM, AND BRAKE HIS TWO HORNS: AND THERE WAS NO POWER IN THE RAM TO STAND BEFORE HIM, BUT HE CAST HIM DOWN TO THE GROUND, AND STAMPED UPON HIM: AND THERE WAS NONE THAT COULD DELIVER THE RAM OUT OF HIS HAND.
—The Medo-Persians fell before the armies of Greece.
Page 18

THEREFORE THE HE GOAT WAXED VERY GREAT: AND WHEN HE WAS STRONG, THE GREAT HORN WAS BROKEN;
—Alexander’s kingdom extended from the Adriatic Sea on the west, to the Indus River of India. This was the largest empire the world had yet seen. But Alexander died in the prime of life, of an illness made worse by intemperance. At the age of 32, the “great horn” was broken.
AND FOR IT
—Alexander’s horn on the he goat, which was removed
CAME UP FOUR NOTABLE ONES
      —four horns, or powerful generals—
TOWARD THE FOUR WINDS OF HEAVEN.
          —Verse 22 explains the horns:
          NOW THAT
          —Alexander, the general—
BEING BROKEN, WHEREAS FOUR STOOD UP FOR IT, FOUR KINGDOMS SHALL STAND UP OUT OF THE NATION,
—out of the territory conquered by Greece—
          —BUT NOT IN HIS POWER.
          —Alexander was then dead.
—Alexander’s four generals divided the Grecian kingdom:
          —Ptolemy went to the south,
—and ruled over Egypt, and Palestine and part of Syria.
          —Seleucus took the eastern part,
—which included most of the Persian empire, part of Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, and northern Syria.
—Lysimachus held the northern portion of the Grecian empire,
—and was in charge of Thrace and much of Asia Minor.
—His territory became smaller with the passing of time, and Seleucus took authority over it, and became known as the king of the north —thus merging the northern and the eastern kingdoms. (See comments on Daniel 11.)
—And in the west, Cassander had control,
—and ruled over Macedonia and Greece.
—(The he goat came from the west. See verse 5. Greece was near the western boundary of the then-important world.)
—The Grecian powers were “toward the four winds of heaven.” As Daniel watched the winds of strife, what next did he see?
AND OUT OF ONE OF THEM CAME FORTH A LITTLE HORN, WHICH WAXED EXCEEDING GREAT, TOWARD THE SOUTH, AND TOWARD THE EAST, AND TOWARD THE PLEASANT LAND.
      —The “pleasant land” is Palestine.
—The little hoary, extending eastward and southward,
      —from the west
—is the same as the Roman horn of Daniel 7:25. It:
—was to speak great words against the most High, and
—was to wear out the saints of the most High, and
—was to think to change times and laws.
Page 19

      —Verses 23 and 24a say:
AND IN THE LATTER TIME OF THEIR KINGDOM, WHEN THE TRANSGRESSORS ARE COME TO THE FULL, A KING OF FIERCE COUNTENANCE, AND UNDERSTANDING DARK SENTENCES, SHALL STAND UP.
          —He would assume power.
AND HIS POWER SHALL BE MIGHTY, BUT NOT BY HIS OWN POWER . . .
—(The sword of the state carried out his wishes. Statecraft was united with churchcraft. See Revelation 17.)
—Daniel tells us more about the little horn:
AND IT WAXED GREAT, EVEN TO THE HOST OF HEAVEN;
—in its boastful and blasphemous assumptions
AND IT CAST DOWN SOME OF THE HOST AND OF THE STARS TO THE GROUND, AND STAMPED UPON THEM.
—Stars can also be human messengers, as well as angels. See Revelation 2:1; AA 586.
Verses 24b and 25a tell us:
AND HE SHALL DESTROY WONDERFULLY, AND SHALL PROSPER, AND PRACTISE, AND SHALL DESTROY THE MIGHTY AND THE HOLY PEOPLE.
—in fierce persecutions, as he wears out the saints of the most High. See Daniel 7:25.
AND THROUGH HIS POLICY ALSO HE SHALL CAUSE CRAFT TO PROSPER IN HIS HAND . . .
YEA, HE MAGNIFIED HIMSELF EVEN TO THE PRINCE OF THE HOST,
      —Jesus, the Son of God
AND BY HIM
—who speaks “great words against the most High”
THE DAILY SACRIFICE WAS TAKEN AWAY, AND THE PLACE OF HIS SANCTUARY WAS CAST DOWN.
—by a false system of worship.
      —Daniel 8:25b continues:
AND HE SHALL MAGNIFY HIMSELF IN HIS HEART, AND BY PEACE SHALL DESTROY MANY:
      —“Many” are put to death who live in supposed security. HE SHALL ALSO STAND UP AGAINST THE PRINCE OF PRINCES;
      —Jesus Christ, the anointed King
AND AN HOST WAS GIVEN HIM AGAINST THE DAILY SACRIFICE BY REASON OF TRANSGRESSION, AND IT CAST DOWN THE TRUTH TO THE GROUND; AND IT PRACTISED, AND PROSPERED.
—Multitudes are ensnared by the deceptions of the little horn power.
—The last of verse 25 tells us its final end:
BUT HE SHALL BE BROKEN WITHOUT HAND.
Page 20

—“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming.” 2Thessalonians 2:8.
—“. . . Thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold . . .” Daniel 2:45.
—This stone represents the setting up of God’s kingdom after the powers of earth are broken.
—Daniel 8 carries out the same beautiful theme as before.

The Daily Sacrifice:
—The little horn power was to take away the “daily sacrifice.” What does that mean?
—In the earthly sanctuary built by the Israelites in the wilderness,
          —there was a continual fire burning upon the altar in the court;
—there was a perpetual incense ascending from the altar in the holy place. See Leviticus 6:13; Exodus 30:7, 8.
—The earthly sanctuary was a “pattern” of the heavenly sanctuary. See Hebrews 8:1-5.
—What do the two altars represent?
—the altar of burnt offerings for the blood of animals; and—the altar of incense for the sweet smelling fragrance.
—“The incense, ascending with the prayers of Israel, represents the merits and intercession of Christ, His perfect righteousness, which through faith is imputed to His people, and which can alone make the worship of sinful beings acceptable to God.
Before the veil of the most holy place,
was an altar of perpetual intercession,
before the holy,
an altar of continual atonement;
By blood and by incense, God was to be approached, —symbols pointing to the great Mediator, through whom sinners may approach Jehovah, and through whom alone mercy and salvation can be granted to the repentant, believing soul.” PP 353. (Emphasis added.)
      —In the heavenly sanctuary,
          —Jesus presents His shed blood as a continual atonement for all who repent of their sins, and believe in Him;
—He offers the incense of His righteousness—from His perfect life—as a perpetual intercession for His people whose sins are forgiven.
—(The blood and the incense —symbolized through Christ’s death and His life—give continual atonement and perpetual intercession to the repenting believer.)
—When faith in the daily (perpetual, or continuing) ministration of Christ is taken from the hearts of men, the “daily” is removed.
—The little horn power takes away the “daily,”
—by substituting a false system of confessing sins, and
—by substituting a false mediator between God and man.
Page 21

—The word “sacrifice” is italicized in many Bibles, and means that it was not in the original text, but was supplied by the translators. It “does not belong to the text . . .” EW 74.
Gabriel Gives Daniel a Time Chart of 2300 Days:
THEN I HEARD ONE SAINT SPEAKING, AND ANOTHER SAINT SAID UNTO THAT CERTAIN SAINT WHICH SPAKE, HOW LONG SHALL BE THE VISION CONCERNING
THE DAILY SACRIFICE,
AND THE TRANSGRESSION OF DESOLATION,
TO GIVE BOTH THE SANCTUARY AND THE HOST TO BE TRODDEN UNDER FOOT?
—Now Daniel is given a time chart:
AND HE SAID UNTO ME,
UNTO TWO THOUSAND AND THREE HUNDRED DAYS; THEN SHALL THE SANCTUARY BE CLEANSED.
—“Through another vision further light was thrown upon the events of the future; and it was at the close of the vision that Daniel heard ‘one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision?Daniel 8:13. The answer that was given, ‘Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed’ (verse 14), filled him with perplexity. Earnestly he sought for the meaning of the vision. He could not understand the relation sustained by the seventy years’ captivity, as foretold through Jeremiah, [Jeremiah 29:10-14.] to the twenty-three hundred years that in vision he heard; the heavenly visitant declare should elapse before the cleansing of God’s sanctuary.” PK 554. (Emphasis added.)
—(Actually those seventy years of Jeremiah’s prophecy were nearly terminated, and had no reference to the 2300 days or to the seventy weeks of Daniel 8 and 9, as we shall see.)
AND IT CAME TO PASS, WHEN I, EVEN I DANIEL, HAD SEEN THE VISION, AND SOUGHT FOR THE MEANING, THEN, BEHOLD, THERE STOOD BEFORE ME AS THE APPEARANCE OF A MAN. AND I HEARD A MAN’S VOICE BETWEEN THE BANKS OF ULAI, WHICH CALLED, AND SAID, GABRIEL, MAKE THIS MAN TO UNDERSTAND THE VISION.
—The One speaking is no doubt Jesus. See Daniel 10:5, 6.
SO HE CAME NEAR WHERE I STOOD: AND WHEN HE CAME, I WAS AFRAID, AND FELL UPON MY FACE: BUT HE SAID UNTO ME, UNDERSTAND, O SON OF MAN: FOR AT THE TIME OF THE END SHALL BE THE VISION.
—The vision of the time chart was not for Daniel’s time.
NOW AS HE WAS SPEAKING WITH ME, I WAS IN A DEEP SLEEP ON MY FACE TOWARD THE GROUND: BUT HE TOUCHED ME, AND SET ME UPRIGHT. AND HE SAID, BEHOLD, I WILL MAKE THEE KNOW WHAT SHALL BE IN THE LAST END OF THE INDIGNATION:
—as the angry nations near their final end.
Page 22

FOR AT THE TIME APPOINTED THE END SHALL BE . . .
—Blessed text! God’s eternal kingdom is to be set up when His time clock reaches the appointed hour!
AND THE VISION OF THE EVENING AND THE MORNING WHICH WAS TOLD IS TRUE:
—the vision of the twenty-three hundred days, or prophetic years.
WHEREFORE SHUT THOU UP THE VISION; FOR IT SHALL BE FOR MANY DAYS.
—Gabriel tells Daniel the vision is for the future.
AND I DANIEL FAINTED, AND WAS SICK CERTAIN DAYS; AFTERWARD I ROSE UP, AND DID THE KING’S BUSINESS; AND I WAS ASTONISHED AT THE VISION,
BUT NONE UNDERSTOOD IT.
—“The angel Gabriel gave him a partial interpretation of Daniel 8; yet when the prophet heard the words, ‘The vision . . . shall be for many days,’ he fainted away.” PK 554.

Daniel 9.

IN THE FIRST YEAR OF DARIUS THE SON OF AHASUERUS, OF THE SEED OF THE MEDES, WHICH WAS MADE KING OVER THE REALM OF THE CHALDEANS; IN THE FIRST YEAR OF HIS REIGN I DANIEL UNDERSTOOD BY BOOKS THE NUMBER OF THE YEARS, WHEREOF THE WORD OF THE LORD CAME TO JEREMIAH THE PROPHET, THAT HE WOULD ACCOMPLISH SEVENTY YEARS IN THE DESOLATIONS OF JERUSALEM.
—“Still burdened in behalf of Israel, Daniel studied anew the prophecies of Jeremiah . . . With faith founded on the sure word of prophecy, Daniel pleaded with the Lord for the speedy fulfillment of these promises. He pleaded for the honor of God to be preserved. In his petition he identified himself fully with those who had fallen short of the divine purpose, confessing their sins as his own. PK 554, 555. (Emphasis added.)
AND I SET MY FACE UNTO THE LORD GOD, TO SEEK BY PRAYER AND SUPPLICATIONS, WITH FASTING, AND SACKCLOTH, AND ASHES:
      —Daniel dearly loved God’s people.
AND I PRAYED UNTO THE LORD MY GOD, AND MADE MY CONFESSION . . .
—“Though Daniel had long been in the service of God, and had been spoken of by heaven as ‘greatly beloved,’ yet he now appeared before God as a sinner, urging the great need of the people he loved. His prayer was eloquent in its simplicity, and intensely earnest. Hear him pleading: . . .” PK 555. (Emphasis added.)
O LORD, THE GREAT AND DREADFUL GOD, KEEPING THE COVENANT AND MERCY TO THEM THAT LOVE HIM, AND TO THEM THAT KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS; WE HAVE SINNED, AND HAVE COMMITTED INIQUITY, AND
Page 23

HAVE DONE WICKEDLY, AND HAVE REBELLED, EVEN BY DEPARTING FROM THY PRECEPTS AND FROM THY JUDGMENTS: NEITHER HAVE WE HEARKENED UNTO THY SERVANTS THE PROPHETS, WHICH SPAKE IN THY NAME TO OUR KINGS, OUR PRINCES, AND OUR FATHERS, AND TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE LAND.
—Daniel continues with his prayer of intercession:
O LORD, RIGHTEOUSNESS BELONGETH UNTO THEE, BUT UNTO US CONFUSION OF FACES, AS AT THIS DAY; TO THE MEN OF JUDAH, AND TO THE INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM, AND UNTO ALL ISRAEL, THAT ARE NEAR, AND THAT ARE FAR OFF, THROUGH ALL THE COUNTRIES WHITHER THOU HAST DRIVEN THEM, BECAUSE OF THEIR TRESPASS THAT THEY HAVE TRESPASSED AGAINST THEE. O LORD, TO US BELONGETH CONFUSION OF FACE, TO OUR KINGS, TO OUR PRINCES, AND TO OUR FATHERS, —BECAUSE WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST THEE.
—Daniel has a personal knowledge of God’s great mercy for sinners who are repentant. And he continues his earnest supplications.
TO THE LORD OUR GOD BELONG MERCIES AND FORGIVENESSES, THOUGH WE HAVE REBELLED AGAINST HIM; NEITHER HAVE WE OBEYED THE VOICE OF THE LORD OUR GOD, TO WALK IN HIS LAWS, WHICH HE SET BEFORE US BY HIS SERVANTS THE PROPHETS. YEA, ALL ISRAEL HAVE TRANSGRESSED THY LAW, EVEN BY DEPARTING, THAT THEY MIGHT NOT OBEY THY VOICE; THEREFORE THE CURSE IS POURED UPON US, AND THE OATH THAT IS WRITTEN IN THE LAW OF MOSES THE SERVANT OF GOD, BECAUSE WE HAVE SINNED AGAINST HIM.
AND HE HATH CONFIRMED HIS WORDS, WHICH HE SPAKE AGAINST US, AND AGAINST OUR JUDGES THAT JUDGED US, BY BRINGING UPON US A GREAT EVIL: FOR UNDER THE WHOLE HEAVEN HATH NOT BEEN DONE AS HATH BEEN DONE UPON JERUSALEM. AS IT IS WRITTEN IN THE LAW OF MOSES, ALL THIS EVIL IS COME UPON US: YET MADE WE NOT OUR PRAYER BEFORE THE LORD OUR GOD, THAT WE MIGHT TURN FROM OUR INIQUITIES, AND UNDERSTAND THY TRUTH. THEREFORE HATH THE LORD WATCHED UPON THE EVIL, AND BROUGHT IT UPON US: FOR THE LORD OUR GOD IS RIGHTEOUS IN ALL HIS WORKS WHICH HE DOETH: FOR WE OBEYED NOT HIS VOICE.
—Share the intense desire which Daniel feels, as he pleads for God’s people who are still in the captivity of sin.
AND NOW, O LORD OUR GOD, THAT HAST BROUGHT THY PEOPLE FORTH OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT WITH A MIGHTY HAND, AND HAST GOTTEN THEE RENOWN, AS AT THIS DAY; WE HAVE SINNED, WE HAVE DONE WICKEDLY. O LORD, ACCORDING TO ALL THY RIGHTEOUSNESS, I BESEECH THEE, LET THINK ANGER AND THY FURY BE
Page 24

TURNED AWAY FROM THY CITY JERUSALEM, THY HOLY MOUNTAIN: BECAUSE FOR OUR SINS, AND FOR THE INIQUITIES OF OUR FATHERS, JERUSALEM AND THY PEOPLE ARE BECOME A REPROACH TO ALL THAT ARE ABOUT US. NOW THEREFORE, O OUR GOD, HEAR THE PRAYER OF THY SERVANT, AND HIS SUPPLICATIONS, AND CAUSE THY FACE TO SHINE UPON THY SANCTUARY THAT IS DESOLATE, FOR THE LORD’S SAKE.
—“Yet ponder the prayer from the lips of this man so highly favored of Heaven. With deep humiliation, with tears and rending of heart he pleads for himself and for his people. He lays his soul open before God, confessing his own unworthiness, and acknowledging the Lord’s greatness and majesty.
—“What earnestness and fervor characterize his supplications! The hand of faith is reached upward to grasp the never-failing promises of the Most High. His soul is wrestling in agony. And he has the evidence that his prayer is heard. He knows that victory is his. If we as a people would pray as Daniel prayed, and wrestle as he wrestled, humbling our souls before God, we should realize as marked answers to our petitions as were granted to Daniel. Hear how he presses his case at the court of heaven.” SL 36, 37. (Emphasis added.)
O MY GOD, INCLINE THINK EAR, AND HEAR; OPEN THINK EYES, AND BEHOLD OUR DESOLATIONS, AND THE CITY WHICH IS CALLED BY THY NAME: FOR WE DO NOT PRESENT OUR SUPPLICATIONS BEFORE THEE FOR OUR RIGHTEOUSNESSES, BUT FOR THY GREAT MERCIES.
—(May the Holy Spirit teach us to pray as did Daniel!)
O LORD, HEAR;
O LORD, FORGIVE;
O LORD, HEARKEN AND DO;
DEFER NOT, FOR THINK OWN SAKE, O MY GOD:
FOR THY CITY AND THY PEOPLE ARE CALLED BY THY NAME.
—Thus ends the intercessory prayer of God’s faithful servant in behalf of Israel.
—“Daniel did not seek to excuse himself or his people before God; but in humility and contrition of soul he confessed the full extent and demerit of their transgressions, and vindicated God’s dealings as just toward a nation that had set at nought His requirements and would not profit by His entreaties.
—“There is great need today of just such sincere, heart felt repentance and confession. Those who have not humbled their souls before God in acknowledging their gilt have not yet fulfilled the first condition of acceptance. If we . . . have not confessed our sin with true humiliation of soul and brokenness of spirit, abhorring our iniquity, we have never sought truly for the forgiveness of sin; and if we have never sought we have never found the peace of God . . . Confession of sin, whether public or private, should be heart felt and freely expressed. It is not to be urged from the sinner. It is not to be made in a flippant and careless way or forced from those
Page 25

who have no realizing sense of the abhorrent character of sin. The confession that is mingled with tears and sorrow, that is the outpouring of the inmost soul, finds its way to the God of infinite pity. Says the psalmist: ‘The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.’” 5T 636, 637. Psalm 34:18. (Emphasis added.)
—“Daniel’s example of prayer and confession is given for our instruction and encouragement.” 4BC 1172.
AND WHILES I WAS SPEAKING, AND PRAYING, AND CONFESSING MY SIN AND THE SIN OF MY PEOPLE ISRAEL, AND PRESENTING MY SUPPLICATION BEFORE THE LORD MY GOD FOR THE HOLY MOUNTAIN OF MY GOD; YEA, WHILES I WAS SPEAKING IN PRAYER, EVEN THE MAN GABRIEL, WHOM I HAD SEEN IN THE VISION AT THE BEGINNING, BEING CAUSED TO FLY SWIFTLY, TOUCHED ME ABOUT THE TIME OF THE EVENING OBLATION.
—Picture Daniel bowed in prayer, as the angel Gabriel touches him.
AND HE INFORMED ME, AND TALKED WITH ME, AND SAID, O DANIEL, I AM NOW COME FORTH TO GIVE THEE SKILL AND UNDERSTANDING.
AT THE BEGINNING OF THY SUPPLICATIONS
—just a few minutes previously —
THE COMMANDMENT CAME FORTH,
      —from our God —
AND I AM COME TO SHEW THEE;
FOR THOU ART GREATLY BELOVED:
—God delights to answer the sincere prayers of His humble children.
—At the beginning of Daniel’s prayer, Gabriel was by God’s throne; and at the end of his prayer, Gabriel was by Daniel’s side. This shows how close, time-wise, the planet earth is to God’s throne.
—“As Daniel’s prayer is going forth, the angel Gabriel comes sweeping down from the heavenly courts, to tell him that his petitions are heard and answered. This mighty angel has been commissioned to give him skill and understanding, —to open before him the mysteries of future ages. . . . In answer to his petition, Daniel received not only the light and truth which he and his people most needed, but a view of the great events of the future, even to the advent of the world’s Redeemer . . .
—“Daniel talked with God. Heaven was opened before him. But the high honors granted him were the result of humiliation and earnest seeking. All who believe with the heart the word of God will hunger and thirst for a knowledge of His will. God is the author of truth. He enlightens the darkened understanding, and gives to the human mind power to grasp and comprehend the truths which He has revealed.” SL 36, 37. (Emphasis added.)
THEREFORE UNDERSTAND THE MATTER, AND CONSIDER THE VISION.
—Gabriel was sent to explain the vision to Daniel, which he had already received — the vision of the 2300 days. I
Page 26

Gabriel Explains the Time Chart to Daniel:
—“Heaven was bending low to hear the earnest supplication of the prophet. Even before he had finished his plea for pardon and restoration, the mighty Gabriel again appeared to him; and called his attention to the vision he had seen prior to the fall of Babylon and the death of Belshazzar. And then the angel outlined before him in detail the period of the seventy weeks . . .” PK 556.
—‘In the eighth chapter of Daniel . . . the angel Gabriel, though commanded to make Daniel understand the vision, gave him only a partial explanation. As the terrible persecution to befall the church was unfolded to the prophet’s vision, physical strength gave way. He could endure no more, and the angel left him for a time. Daniel ‘fainted, and was sick certain days.’ ‘And I was astonished at the vision,’ he says, ‘but none understood it.’
—“Yet God had bidden His messenger: ‘Make this man to understand the vision.’ That commission must be fulfilled. In obedience to it, the angel, sometime afterward, returned to Daniel, saying: ‘I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding,’ ‘therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.’ Daniel 8:27, 16; 9:22, 23, 25-27. There was one important point in the vision of chapter 8 which had been left unexplained, namely, that relating to time—the period of the 2300 days; therefore the angel, in resuming his explanation, dwells chiefly upon the subject of time.” GC 325. (Emphasis added.)
SEVENTY WEEKS
      —70 x 7 days in each week = 490 days.
—“. . . Four hundred and ninety days, represent four hundred and ninety years . . . A day in prophecy stands for a year. See Numbers 14:34; Ezekiel 4:6.” PK 698.
ARE DETERMINED
—cut off from the 2300 days, or prophetic years, of Daniel 8:14.
UPON THY PEOPLE AND UPON THY HOLY CITY,
—the Jewish nation, and their holy city, Jerusalem
—(“And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:29. )
[1.] TO FINISH THE TRANSGRESSION,
[2.] AND TO MAKE AN END OF SINS,
[3.] AND TO MAKE RECONCILIATION FOR INIQUITY,

—by the death of Jesus on the cross of Calvary —
[4.] AND TO BRING IN EVERLASTING RIGHTEOUSNESS,
—by the perfect life of Jesus on this earth.
—“The kingdom of grace was instituted immediately after the fall of man, when a plan was devised for the redemption of the guilty race. It then existed in the purpose and by the promise of God; and through faith, men could become its subjects. Yet it was not actually established until the death of Christ.” GC 347. (Emphasis added.)
[5. ] AND TO SEAL UP THE VISION —
[6. ]AND [to seal up the] PROPHECY,

—Since the first part of the prophecy was fulfilled, we may be assured that the rest of the prophecy will be fulfilled also.
[7.] AND TO ANOINT THE MOST HOLY.
Page 27

To finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity . . .

—During this seventy week period, Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit at His baptism.
—“In the prophecy of Daniel it was recorded of Christ that He shall ‘make reconciliation for iniquity, and . . . bring in everlasting righteousness’ (Dan. 9:24). Every soul may say: ‘By His perfect obedience He has satisfied the claims of the law, and my only hope is found in looking to Him as my substitute and surety, who obeyed the law perfectly for me. By faith in His merits I am free from the condemnation of the law. He clothes me with His righteousness which answers all the demands of the law. I am complete in Him who brings in everlasting righteousness. He presents me to God in the spotless garment of which no thread was woven by any human agent. All is of Christ, and all the glory, honor, and majesty are to be given to the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sins of the world.’” 1SM 396. (Emphasis added.)
—“Men will learn of the reconciliation for iniquity and of the everlasting righteousness which the Messiah has brought in through His sacrifice. The cross of Calvary is the great center. This truth acted upon will make Christ’s sacrifice effectual. This is that which Gabriel revealed to Daniel in answer to fervent prayer. . . He was to bring everlasting deliverance to all who would walk after Him, giving positive evidence that they are separated from the world.” 4BC 1172, 1173. (Emphasis added.)

KNOW THEREFORE AND UNDERSTAND,

THAT FROM THE GOING FORTH OF THE COMMANDMENT TO RESTORE AND TO BUILD JERUSALEM
—“. . . as completed by the decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus [which] went into effect in the autumn of 457 B.C. See Ezra 6:14; 7:1, 9. PK 699. (Emphasis added.)
UNTO THE MESSIAH THE PRINCE
—unto the time when He was anointed for His work at His baptism —
SHALL BE SEVEN WEEKS, AND THREESCORE AND TWO WEEKS
      —69 x 7 days in each week = 483 days, or 483 prophetic years.
—There would be 69 prophetic weeks—or 483 years—from the decree to restore Jerusalem until the baptism of the Messiah.
—After the decree of 457 B.C., there were 456 full years left of B.C. time, before starting to calculate on A.D. time.
—Thus 483 years of time would reach to the year A.D. 27.
      —(456 + 27 = 483.)
—It was in the year A.D. 27 that Jesus made His way to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, and there He received heaven’s anointing as He was baptized. See the margin of Matthew 3:16, 17.
THE STREET SHALL BE BUILT AGAIN, AND THE WALL EVEN IN TROUBLOUS TIMES.
      —the rebuilding of Jerusalem
AND AFTER THREESCORE AND TWO WEEKS SHALL MESSIAH BE CUT OFF,
Page 28

—“Cut off” means to face a violent death. See Genesis 9:11.
—Sometime after this period of time, Messiah would be killed. Verse 27 will explain the exact time.
—The Messiah would be cut off —
BUT NOT FOR HIMSELF:
—It was for me and for you that He paid the death penalty at Calvary!
AND THE PEOPLE OF THE PRINCE THAT SHALL COME
      —Satan is this prince —
SHALL DESTROY THE CITY AND THE SANCTUARY;
—Satan induces his people to destroy everything that God will permit him to destroy.
AND THE END THEREOF SHALL BE WITH A FLOOD, AND UN TO THE END OF THE WAR DESOLATIONS ARE DETERMINED.
—Until the great controversy between Christ and Satan has come to an end, there will be desolations caused by Satan, which will be almost overwhelming—like a flood. Only those who wear the seal of God will be safe in the coming crisis.
AND HE
      —Jesus, the Messiah —
SHALL CONFIRM THE COVENANT WITH MANY
—with all of His people who look to Him for salvation —
FOR ONE WEEK:
—There was to be seven years of prophetic time, when God’s covenant of redemption would “confirm” many people. It was the last week of the 70 weeks allotted to Daniel’s people.
—This last prophetic week began in A.D. 27, at the baptism of Jesus, and continued until A.D. 34.
AND IN THE MIDST OF THE WEEK
      —the spring of A.D. 31.
HE SHALL CAUSE THE SACRIFICE AND THE OBLATION TO CEASE
—Jesus became the true Passover Lamb, when He died on the cross at the hour of the evening sacrifice.
—“Jesus, when He had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent. Matthew 27:50, 51. (Emphasis added.)
—“In the spring of A.D. 31, Christ the true sacrifice was offered on Calvary. Then the veil of the temple was rent in twain, showing that the sacredness and significance of the sacrificial service had departed. The time had come for the earthly sacrifice and oblation to cease . . .
—“When the loud cry, ‘It is finished,’ came from the lips of Christ, the priests were officiating in the temple. It was the hour of the evening sacrifice. The lamb representing Christ had been brought to be slain. Clothed in his significant and beautiful dress, the priest stood with lifted knife, as did Abraham when he was about to slay his son. With intense interest the people were looking on. But the earth trembles and quakes; for the Lord Himself draws near. With a rending noise the inner veil of the temple is torn from top to
Page 29

bottom by an unseen hand, throwing open to the gaze of the multitude a place once filled with the presence of God. In this place the Shekinah had dwelt. Here God had manifested His glory above the mercy seat. No one but the high priest ever lifted the veil separating this apartment from the rest of the temple. He entered in once a year to make an atonement for the sins of the people. But lo, this veil is rent in twain. The most holy place of the earthly sanctuary is no longer sacred.
—“All is terror and confusion. The priest is about to slay the victim; but the knife drops from his nerveless hand, and the lamb escapes. Type has met antitype in the death of God’s Son. The great sacrifice has been made. The way into the holiest is laid open. A new and living way is prepared for all. No longer need sinful, sorrowing humanity await the coming of the high priest. Henceforth the Saviour was to officiate as priest and advocate in the heaven of heavens. It was as if a living voice had spoken to the worshipers: There is now an end to sacrifices and offerings for sin. ‘By His own blood’ He entereth ‘in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.’” Heb. 10:7; 9:12. DA 233, 756, 757. (Emphasis added.)
AND FOR THE OVERSPREADING OF ABOMINATIONS
—caused by the people of Satan —
HE SHALL MAKE IT DESOLATE,
—“Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.” Matthew 23:38.
EVEN UNTIL THE CONSUMMATION,
—the end of the controversy between Christ and Satan —
AND THAT DETERMINED
      —by God —
SHALL BE POURED UPON THE DESOLATE.
—The margin says, “or, upon the desolator.”
—For a glimpse of this punishment poured upon the desolators, study Chapter 6 on the seven last plagues and the battle of Armageddon.

The Relationship of the 70 Weeks to the 2300 Days:
—“The angel had been sent to Daniel for the express purpose of explaining to him the point which he had failed to understand in the vision of the eighth chapter, the statement relative to time—‘unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.’ After bidding Daniel ‘understand the matter, and consider the vision,’ the very first words of the angel are: ‘Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy Holy City.’ The word here translated ‘determined’ literally signifies ‘cut off.’ Seventy weeks, representing 490 years, are declared by the angel to be cut off, as specially pertaining to the Jews. But from what were they cut off? As the 2300 days was the only period of time mentioned in chapter 8, it must be the period from which the seventy weeks were cut off; the seventy weeks must therefore be a part of the 2300 days, and the two periods must begin together. The seventy weeks were declared by the angel to date from the
Page 30

going forth of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem. If the date of this commandment could be found, then the starting point for the great period of the 2300 days would be ascertained.
—“In the seventh chapter of Ezra the decree is found. Verses 12-26. In its completest form it was issued by Artaxerxes, king of Persia, 457 B.C. But in Ezra 6:14 the house of the Lord et Jerusalem is said to have been built ‘according to the commandment [‘decree,’ margin] of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.’ These three kings, in originating, reaffirming, and completing the decree, brought it to the perfection required by the prophecy to mark the beginning of the 2300 years. Taking 457 B.C., the time when the decree was completed, as the date of the commandment, every specification of the prophecy concerning the seventy weeks was seen to have been fulfilled.
—“‘From the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks’ — namely, sixty-nine weeks, or 483 years. The decree of Artaxerxes went into effect in the autumn of 457 B.C. From this date, 483 years extend to the autumn of A.D. 27. (See Appendix.) At that time this prophecy was fulfilled. The word ‘Messiah’ signifies ‘the Anointed One.’ In the autumn of A.D. 27 Christ was baptized by John and received the anointing of the Spirit. The apostle Peter testifies that ‘God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power.’ Acts 10:38. And the Saviour Himself declared: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.’ Luke 4:18. After His baptism He went into Galilee, ‘preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled.’ Mark 1:14, 15.
—“‘And He shall confirm the covenant with many for one week.’ The ‘week’ here brought to view is the last one of the seventy; it is the last seven years of the period allotted especially to the Jews. During this time, extending from A.D. 27 to A.D. 34, Christ, at fist in person and afterward by His disciples, extended the gospel invitation especially to the Jews. As the apostles went forth with the good tidings of the kingdom, the Saviour’s direction was: ‘Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.’ Matthew 10:5, 6.
—“‘In the midst of the week He shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease.’ In A.D. 31, three and a half years after His baptism, our Lord was crucified. With the great sacrifice offered upon Calvary, ended that system of offerings which for four thousand years had pointed forward to the Lamb of God. Type had met antitype, and all the sacrifices and oblations of the ceremonial system were there to cease.
—“The seventy weeks, or 490 years, especially allotted to the Jews, ended, as we have seen, in A.D. 34. At that time, through the action of the Jewish Sanhedrin, the nation sealed its rejection of the gospel by the martyrdom of Stephen and the persecution of the followers of Christ. Then the message of salvation, no longer restricted to the
Page 31

chosen people, was given to the world. The disciples, forced by persecution to flee from Jerusalem, ‘went everywhere preaching the word.’ ‘Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.’ Peter, divinely guided, opened the gospel to the centurion of Caesarea, the God-fearing Comelius; and the ardent Paul, won to the faith of Christ, was commissioned to carry the glad tidings ‘far hence unto the Gentiles.’ Acts 8:4, 5; 22:21.
—“Thus far every specification of the prophecies is strikingly fulfilled and the beginning of the seventy weeks is fixed beyond question at 457 B.C., and their expiration in A.D. 34. From this data there is no difficulty in finding the termination of the 2300 days. The seventy weeks —490 days— having been cut off from the 2300, there were 1810 days remaining. After the end of 490 days, the 1810 days were still to be fulfilled. From A.D. 34, 1810 years extend to 1844. Consequently the 2300 days of Daniel 8:14 terminate in 1844. At the expiration of this great prophetic period, upon the testimony of the angel of God, ‘the sanctuary shall be cleansed.’ Thus the time of the cleansing of the sanctuary . . . was definitely pointed out.” GC 326-328. (Emphasis in the original and added.)
—In 1844 the cleansing of the sanctuary was to begin!

What Is The Sanctuary? —and Why Does It Need to be Cleansed?
—“The question, What is the sanctuary? is clearly answered in the Scriptures. The term ‘sanctuary,’ as used in the Bible, refers, first, to the tabernacle built by Moses, as a pattern of heavenly things; and,; secondly, to the ‘true tabernacle’ in heaven, to which the earthly sanctuary pointed . . .
—“Moses made the earthly sanctuary after a pattern which was shown him. Paul teaches that that pattern was the true sanctuary which is in heaven. And John testifies that he saw it in heaven . . . [See Exodus 25:8; Hebrews 8:1-5; 9:9, 23, 24; Revelation 11:19.]
—“At the death of Christ the typical service ended. The ‘true tabernacle’ in heaven is the sanctuary of the new covenant. And as the prophecy of Daniel 8:14 is fulfilled in this dispensation, the sanctuary to which it refers must be the sanctuary of the new covenant. At the termination of the 2300 days, in 1844, there had been no sanctuary on earth for many centuries. Thus the prophecy, ‘Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed,’ unquestionably points to the sanctuary in heaven.
—“But the most important question remains to be answered: What is the cleansing of the sanctuary? That there was such a service in connection with the earthly sanctuary is stated in the Old Testament Scriptures. [Leviticus 16:19.] But can there be anything in heaven to be cleansed?” GC 415-417. (Emphasis added.)
—“. . . How could the sanctuary in heaven need cleansing? Turning again to the Scriptures, the students of prophecy learned that the cleansing was not a removal of physical impurities, for it was to be accomplished with blood, and therefore must be a cleansing from sin.” SR 377. (Emphasis added.)
Page 32

—“In Hebrews 9 the cleansing of both the earthly and the heavenly sanctuary is plainly taught. ‘Almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these [the blood of animals]; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these’ (Hebrews 9:22, 23), even the precious blood of Christ.
—“The cleansing, both in the typical and in the real service, must be accomplished with blood: in the former, with the blood of animals; in the latter, with the blood of Christ. Paul states, as the reason why this cleansing must be performed with blood, that without shedding of blood is no remission. Remission, or putting away of sin, is the work to be accomplished . . .
—“The ministration of the earthly sanctuary consisted of two divisions; the priests ministered daily in the holy place, while once a year the high priest performed a special work of atonement in the most holy, for the cleansing of the sanctuary. Day by day the repentant sinner brought his offering to the door of the tabernacle and, placing his hand upon the victim’s head, confessed his sins, thus in figure transferring them from himself to the innocent sacrifice. The animal was then slain. Without shedding of blood,’ says the apostle, there is no remission of sin. ‘The life of the flesh is in the blood.’ Leviticus 17:11. The broken law of God demanded the life of the transgressor. The blood, representing the forfeited life of the sinner, whose guilt the victim bore, was carried by the priest into the holy place and sprinkled before the veil, behind which was the ark containing the law that the sinner had transgressed. By this ceremony the sin was, through the blood, transferred in figure to the sanctuary. . . .
—“Such was the work that went on, day by day, throughout the year. The sins of Israel were thus transferred to the sanctuary, and a special work became necessary for their removal. God commanded that an atonement be made for each of the sacred apartments . . . Leviticus 16:16, 19.
—“Once a year, on the great Day of Atonement, the priest entered the most holy place for the cleansing of the sanctuary. The work performed completed the yearly round of ministration. On the Day of Atonement two kids of the goats were brought to the door of the tabernacle, and lots were cast upon them, ‘one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat.Verse 8. The goat upon which fell the lot for the Lord was to be slain as a sin offering for the people. And the priest was to bring his blood within the veil and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat. The blood was also to be sprinkled upon the altar of incense that was before the veil.
“‘And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, . . . putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness . . .’
—“The whole ceremony was designed to impress the Israelites with the holiness of God and His abhorrence of sin; and, further, to show them
Page 33

that they could not come in contact with sin without becoming polluted. Every man was required to afflict his soul while this work of atonement was going forward . . . The whole congregation of Israel were to spend the day in solemn humiliation before God, with prayer, fasting, and deep searching of heart.
—“Important truths concerning the atonement are taught by the typical service. A substitute was accepted in the sinner’s stead; but the sin was not canceled by the blood of the victim. A means was thus provided by which it was transferred to the sanctuary. By the offering of blood the sinner acknowledged the authority of the law, confessed his guilt in transgression, and expressed his desire for pardon through faith in a Redeemer to come; but he was not yet entirely released from the condemnation of the law. On the Day of Atonement the high priest, having taken an offering from the congregation, went into the most holy place with the blood of this offering, and sprinkled it upon the mercy seat directly over the law, to make satisfaction for its claims. Then, in his character of mediator, he took the sins upon himself and bore them from the sanctuary. . . .
—“Such was the service performed ‘unto the example and shadow of heavenly things.’ [Hebrews 8:5.] And what was done in type in the ministration of the earthly sanctuary is done in reality in the ministration of the heavenly sanctuary. After His ascension our Saviour began His work as our High Priest. Says Paul: ‘Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.’ Hebrews 9:24. . . .
—“For eighteen centuries this work of ministration continued in the first apartment of the sanctuary. The blood of Christ, pleaded in behalf of penitent believers, secured their pardon and acceptance with the Father, yet their sins still remained upon the books of record. As in the typical service there was a work of atonement at the close of the year, so before Christ’s work for the redemption of men is completed there is a work of atonement for the removal of sin from the sanctuary. This is the service which began when the 2300 days ended. At that time, as foretold by Daniel the prophet, our High Priest entered the most holy, to perform the last division of His solemn work —to cleanse the sanctuary.
—“As anciently the sins of the people were by faith placed upon the sin offering and through its blood transferred, in figure, to the earthly sanctuary, so in the new covenant the sins of the repentant are by faith placed upon Christ and transferred, in fact, to the heavenly sanctuary. And as the typical cleansing of the earthly was accomplished by the removal of the sins by which it had been polluted, so the actual cleansing of the heavenly is to be accomplished by the removal, or blotting out, of the sins which are there recorded. But before this can be accomplished, there must be an examination of the books of record to determine who, through repentance of sin and faith in Christ, are entitled to the benefits of His atonement. The cleansing of the sanctuary therefore involves a work of investigation —a work of
Page 34

judgment. This work must be performed prior to the coming of Christ to redeem His people; for when He comes, His reward is with Him to give to every man according to his works. Revelation 22:12.” GC 417-422. (Emphasis in the original and added.)
—“At the time appointed for the judgment —the close of the 2300 days, in 1844 began the work of investigation and blotting out of sins.” GC 486. (For further study, see Chapter 3, entitled, “The Vision of the Heavenly Sanctuary.”)
—“God’s people are now to have their eyes fixed on the heavenly sanctuary, where the final ministration of our great High Priest in the work of the judgment is going forward, —where He is interceding for His people.” LS 278. (Emphasis added.)
—“By study, contemplation, and prayer God’s people will be elevated above common, earthly thoughts and feelings, and will be brought into harmony with Christ and His great work of cleansing the sanctuary above from the sins of the people. Their faith will go with Him into the sanctuary, and the worshipers on earth will be carefully reviewing their lives and comparing their characters with the great standard of righteousness.” 5T 575. The Background for the Fourth Great Outline of History:

Daniel 10:
IN THE THIRD YEAR OF CYRUS KING OF PERSIA A THING WAS REVEALED UNTO DANIEL, WHOSE NAME WAS CALLED BELTESHAZZAR;
—This name was originally given to Daniel by the prince of the eunuchs when Daniel was a lad of 18. (See Daniel 1:7; 4T 570.) (Daniel is now about 88 years old as this fourth outline of prophetic history is given. He had been prime minister of both Babylon and Medo-Persia, and was one of the “world’s greatest statesmen,” serving faithfully under a number of earthly monarchs. Because he was a moral giant in his youth, coupled with his talents which had been surrendered to God, he rose speedily to position of prime minister. And when Darius the Mede took the throne formerly occupied by the Babylonian rulers, and reorganized the government, Daniel was placed over the 120 ruling princes. See Ed 51, 56; ML 20; 4T 368; PK 539.)
—“The history of Joseph and Daniel is an illustration of what He [God] will do for those who yield themselves to Him and with the whole heart seek to accomplish His purpose.
—“The greatest want of the world is the want of men
men who will not be bought or sold,
men who in their inmost souls are true and honest,
men who do not fear to call sin by its right name,
men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole,
men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.

—“But such a character is not the result of accident; it is not due to special favors or endowments of Providence. A noble character is
Page 35

the result of self-discipline, of the subjection of the lower to the higher nature —the surrender of self for the service of love to God and man. ”Ed 57. (Emphasis added.)
—“Daniel was true, noble, and generous. While he was anxious to be at peace with all men, he would not permit any power to turn him aside from the path of duty. He was wiring to obey those who had rule over him, as far as he could do so consistently with truth and righteousness; but kings and decrees could not make him swerve from his allegiance to the King of kings.” 4T 570. (Emphasis added.)
AND THE THING
—or vision given to Daniel from heaven —
WAS TRUE, BUT THE TIME APPOINTED WAS LONG:
—clear down to the end of time —
AND HE UNDERSTOOD THE THING, AND HAD UNDERSTANDING OF THE VISION.
—“Upon the occasion . . . [of the previous vision] the angel Gabriel imparted to Daniel all the instruction which he was then able to receive. A few years afterward, however, the prophet desired to learn more of subjects not yet fully explained, and again set himself to seek light and wisdom from God.” SL 37. (Emphasis added.)
IN THOSE DAYS I DANIEL WAS MOURNING THREE FULL WEEKS. I ATE NO PLEASANT BREAD, NEITHER CAME FLESH NOR WINE IN MY MOUTH, NEITHER DID I ANOINT MYSELF AT ALL, TILL THREE WHOLE WEEKS WERE FULFILLED.
—Daniel was really in earnest about being in communion with God. The promise is: “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6.
AND IN THE FOUR AND TWENTIETH DAY OF THE FIRST MONTH, AS I WAS BY THE SIDE OF THE GREAT RIVER, WHICH IS HIDDEKEL; THEN I LIFTED UP MINE EYES, AND LOOKED, AND BEHOLD A CERTAIN MAN
          CLOTHED IN LINEN,
WHOSE LOINS WERE GIRDED WITH FINE GOLD OF UPHAZ:
HIS BODY ALSO WAS LIKE THE BERYL,
AND HIS FACE AS THE APPEARANCE OF LIGHTNING,
AND HIS EYES AS LAMPS OF FIRE,
AND HIS ARMS AND HIS FEET LIKE IN COLOUR TO POLISHED BRASS,
AND THE VOICE OF HIS WORDS LIKE THE VOICE OF A MULTITUDE.
—“This description is similar to that given by John when Christ was revealed to him upon the Isle of Patmos. [Revelation 1:13-16.] No less a personage than the Son of God appeared to Daniel. Our Lord comes with another heavenly messenger to teach Daniel what would take place in the latter days.
—“Daniel was an aged man. His life had been passed amid the fascinations of a heathen court, his mind cumbered with the affairs of a great empire. Yet he turns aside from all these to afflict his soul before God, and seek a knowledge of the purposes of the Most High.
Page 36

And in response to his supplications, light from the heavenly courts was communicated for those who should live in the latter days. With what earnestness, then, should we seek God, that He may open our understanding to comprehend the truths brought to us from heaver.” SL 37. (Emphasis added.)
AND I DANIEL ALONE SAW THE VISION: FOR THE MEN THAT WERE WITH ME SAW NOT THE VISION; BUT A GREAT QUAKING FELL UPON THEM, SO THAT THEY FLED TO HIDE THEMSELVES. THEREFORE I WAS LEFT ALONE, AND SAW THIS GREAT VISION,
—What was Daniel’s physical condition as he saw this vision?
AND THERE REMAINED NO STRENGTH IN ME: FOR MY COMELINESS WAS TURNED IN ME INTO CORRUPTION,
—when he saw himself, as compared with divine perfection —
AND I RETAINED NO STRENGTH.
—“All who are truly sanctified will have a similar experience. The clearer their views of the greatness, glory, and perfection of Christ, the more vividly will they see their own weakness and imperfection. SL 38. (Emphasis added.)
—“When the prophet Daniel beheld the glory surrounding the heavenly Messenger that was sent unto him, he was overwhelmed with a sense of his own weakness and imperfection. Describing the effect of the wonderful scene, he says, ‘. . . My comeliness was turned in me into corruption . . .’ Daniel 10:8. The soul thus touched will hate its selfishness, abhor its self-love, and will seek, through Christ’s righteousness, for the purity of heart that is in harmony with the law of God and the character of Christ. . . .
—“One ray of the glory of God, one gleam of the purity of Christ, penetrating the soul, makes every spot of defilement painfully distinct . . . He loathes himself as he views the pure, spotless character of Christ.” SC 29. (Emphasis added.)
YET HEARD I THE VOICE OF HIS WORDS: AND WHEN I HEARD THE VOICE OF HIS WORDS, THEN WAS I IN A DEEP SLEEP ON MY FACE, AND MY FACE TOWARD THE GROUND.
—As the words of Jesus came to Daniel, he lay prostrate on the ground before his glorious Lord.
—Afterward the angel Gabriel ministers to God’s faithful servant.
AND, BEHOLD, AN HAND TOUCHED ME, WHICH SET ME UPON MY KNEES AND UPON THE PALMS OF MY HANDS. AND HE SAID UNTO ME, O DANIEL, A MAN GREATLY BELOVED,
—Gabriel knew how the heavenly Family felt about Daniel. What a beautiful salutation! (And Heaven holds deep love for you, too!)
UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT I SPEAK UNTO THEE, AND STAND UPRIGHT: FOR UNTO THEE AM I NOW SENT. AND WHEN HE HAD SPOKEN THIS WORD UNTO ME, I STOOD TREMBLING.
THEN SAID HE UNTO ME, FEAR NOT, DANIEL: FOR FROM THE FIRST DAY THAT THOU DIDST SET THINK HEART TO
Page 37

UNDERSTAND, AND TO CHASTEN THYSELF BEFORE THY GOD.
—at the beginning of the three weeks of earnest intercession
THY WORDS WERE HEARD,
—Heaven always listens to the sincere petitions from earth!
AND I AM COME FOR THY WORDS.
—And Heaven always answers —even though the answer may be delayed three weeks, or more!
BUT THE PRINCE OF THE KINGDOM OF PERSIA
      —Satan himself
WITHSTOOD ME ONE AND TWENTY DAYS:
—“For three weeks Gabriel wrestled with the powers of darkness, seeking to counteract the influences at work on the mind of Cyrus; and before the contest closed, Christ Himself came to Gabriel’s aid.” PK 572. (Emphasis added.)
BUT, LO, MICHAEL,
—Jesus, the Son of God —
ONE OF THE CHIEF PRINCES, CAME TO HELP ME: AND I REMAINED THERE WITH THE KINGS OF PERSIA.
—“What great honor is shown to Daniel by the Majesty of heaven! He comforts His trembling servant, and assures him that his prayer has been heard in heaven. In answer to that fervent petition the angel Gabriel was sent to affect the heart of the Persian king. The monarch had resisted the impressions of the Spirit of God during the three weeks while Daniel was fasting and praying, but heaven’s Prince, the Archangel, Michael, was sent to turn the heart of the stubborn king to take some decided action to answer the prayer of Daniel.” SL 38. (Emphasis added.)
—(“If you will find voice and time to pray, God will find time and voice to answer.” RH April 1, 1890.) (Emphasis added.)
—“By this we see that heavenly agencies have to contend with hindrances before the purpose of God is fulfilled in its time. The king of Persia was controlled by the highest of all evil angels. He refused, as did Pharaoh, to obey the word of the Lord. Gabriel declared, He withstood me twenty-one days by his representations against the Jews. But Michael came to his help, and then he remained with the kings of Persia, holding the powers in check, giving right counsel against evil counsel. . . .
—“We have before us in the Word of God instances of heavenly agencies working on the minds of kings and rulers, while at the same time satanic agencies were also at work on their minds. No human eloquence, in strongly set forth human opinions, can change the working of satanic agencies. Satan seeks continually to block the way, so that the truth shall be bound about by human devising; and those who have light and knowledge are in the greatest danger unless they constantly consecrate themselves to God, humiliating self, and realizing the peril of the times.
—“Heavenly beings are appointed to answer the prayers of those who are working unselfishly for the interests of the cause of God. The very highest angels in the heavenly courts are appointed to
Page 38

work out the prayers which ascend to God for the advancement of the cause of God. Each angel has his particular post of duty, which he is not permitted to leave for any other place. If he should leave, the powers of darkness would gain an advantage. . . .
—“As a people we do not understand as we should the great conflict going on between invisible agencies, the controversy between loyal and disloyal angels. Evil angels are constantly at work, planning their line of attack, controlling as commanders, kings, and rulers, the disloyal human forces. . . . I call upon the ministers of Christ to press home upon the understanding of all who come within the reach of their voice, the truth of the ministration of angels. . . . We must pray as did Daniel, that we may be guarded by heavenly intelligences. As ministering spirits angels are sent forth to minister to those who shall be heirs of salvation. Pray, my brethren, pray as you have never prayed before. We are not prepared for the Lord’s coming. We need to make thorough work for eternity.” 4BC 1173. (Emphasis added.)
—“While Satan was striving to influence the highest powers in the kingdom of Medo-Persia to show disfavor to God’s people, angels worked in behalf of the exiles. The controversy was one in which all heaven was interested. Through the prophet Daniel we are given a glimpse of this mighty struggle between the forces of good and the forces of evil. . . . All that heaven could do in behalf of the people of God was done. The victory was finally gained; the forces of the enemy were held in check all the days of Cyrus, and all the days of his son Cambyses . . .” PK 571, 572. (Emphasis added.)
—The angel Gabriel continues speaking to Daniel:
NOW I AM COME TO MAKE THEE UNDERSTAND WHAT SHALL BEFALL THY PEOPLE IN THE LATTER DAYS:
—Daniel’s great burden was for God’s people.
FOR YET THE VISION IS FOR MANY DAYS.
—It reaches down through twenty-five centuries —to our time!
AND WHEN HE HAD SPOKEN SUCH WORDS UNTO ME,
I SET MY FACE TOWARD THE GROUND,
AND I BECAME DUMB.
—Jesus is also by Daniel’s side.
AND, BEHOLD, ONE LIKE THE SIMILITUDE OF THE SONS OF MEN TOUCHED MY LIPS: THEN I OPENED MY MOUTH, AND SPAKE, AND SAID UNTO HIM THAT STOOD BEFORE ME, O MY LORD, BY THE VISIONS MY SORROWS ARE TURNED UPON ME, AND I HAVE RETAINED NO STRENGTH.
—Picture the aged prophet, as he realizes his unworthiness and need.
FOR HOW CAN THE SERVANT OF THIS MY LORD TALK WITH THIS MY LORD? FOR AS FOR ME, STRAITWAY THERE REMAINED NO STRENGTH IN ME, NEITHER IS THERE BREATH LEFT IN ME.
—Daniel was preserved in vision by God’s power, even though he did not breathe.
—“So great was the divine glory revealed to Daniel that he could not
Page 39

endure the sight. Then the Messenger of heaven veiled the brightness of His presence and appeared to the prophet as ‘One like the, similitude of the sons of men.’ By His divine power He strengthened this man of integrity and of faith, to hear the message sent to him from God. SL 39. (Emphasis added.)
THEN THERE CAME AGAIN AND TOUCHED ME ONE LIKE THE APPEARANCE OF A MAN,
      —the angel Gabriel —
AND HE STRENGTHENED ME, AND SAID, O MAN GREATLY BELOVED, FEAR NOT: PEACE BE UNTO THEE, BE STRONG, YEA, BE STRONG.
(Let this same message of courage reach into your own heart!)
AND WHEN HE HAD SPOKEN UNTO ME, I WAS STRENGTHENED, AND SAID, LET MY LORD SPEAK; FOR THOU HAST STRENGTHENED ME.
—Daniel is now in a position to receive the message from heaven for God’s people—the fourth great outline of prophetic history.
      —Gabriel speaks to Daniel:
THEN SAID HE, KNOWEST THOU WHEREFORE I COME UNTO THEE? AND NOW WILL I RETURN TO FIGHT WITH THE PRINCE OF PERSIA: AND WHEN I AM GONE FORTH, LO, THE PRINCE OF GRECIA SHALL COME.
—After Gabriel finishes talking with Daniel, he will continue at his post of duty against the forces of evil.
BUT I WILL SHEW THEE THAT WHICH IS NOTED IN THE SCRIPTURE OF TRUTH: AND THERE IS NONE THAT HOLDETH WITH ME IN THESE THINGS, BUT MICHAEL YOUR PRINCE.
—Jesus had revealed the future events of the fourth time prophecy to His loyal angel, Gabriel.
—And Daniel has now gone through the experience necessary so that he is enabled to receive God’s messages for future ages.
—Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will prepare us for these messages.

Daniel 11.
ALSO I IN THE FIRST YEAR OF DARIUS THE MEDE,
—Gabriel goes back into the past —
EVEN I, STOOD TO CONFIRM AND TO STRENGTHEN HIM.
—like he had been doing for Cyrus, king of Persia.
—Both kings were honored of heaven with special light and strength.
AND NOW I WILL SHEW THEE THE TRUTH.
—Gabriel brings Daniel the truth about the future—for our benefit.
—Following the rise and fall of nations, God’s eternal kingdom will be set up, and all of His people will be delivered.
—This chart of future events is of special interest for God’s people in the last days of earth’s history. They can trace down the minute details of prophecy —given to Daniel in B.C. 534— and realize that God’s word is indeed “truth.”
—Soon the kingdom of Jesus is to replace all other kingdoms!
Page 40

The fourth Outline of History:

BEHOLD, THERE SHALL STAND UP YET THREE KINGS IN PERSIA;
—to follow Cyrus. (Cambyses, False Smerdis, and Darius I.)
AND THE FOURTH SHALL BE FAR RICHER THAN THEY ALL:
—The fourth king is Xerxes, and is the same as King Ahasuerus of Queen Esther’s time. He was especially rich. See Esther 1:1, 4.
AND BY HIS STRENGTH THROUGH HIS RICHES HE SHALL STIR UP ALL AGAINST THE REALM OF GRECIA.
—His riches made him proud—and the Medo-Persians failed their God-given opportunities the same as the Babylonians.
—“Every nation that has come upon the stage of action has been permitted to occupy its place on earth, that the fact might be determined whether it would fulfill the purposes of the Watcher and the Holy One. Prophecy has traced the rise and progress of the world’s great empires —Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome. With each of these, as with the nations of less power, history has repeated itself. Each has had its period of test; each has failed, its glory faded, its power departed.” PK 535. (Emphasis added.)
AND A MIGHTY KING SHALL STAND UP, THAT SHALL RULE WITH GREAT DOMINION, AND DO ACCORDING TO HIS WILL.
—This is Alexander the Great, of the Grecian kingdom.
—In the vision of the great image of Daniel 2, the kingdom of Greece is symbolized by the thighs of brass; in Daniel 7, by the leopard with four wings and four heads; and in Daniel 8, by the he-goat, whose notable horn was broken,
—and in its place came up four smaller horns.
AND WHEN HE SHALL STAND UP,
—at the height of his power —
HIS KINGDOM SHALL BE BROKEN,
—Alexander died at the age of 32 —
AND SHALL BE DIVIDED TOWARD THE FOUR WINDS OF HEAVEN; AND NOT TO HIS POSTERITY, NOR ACCORDING TO HIS DOMINION WHICH HE RULED: FOR HIS KINGDOM SHALL BE PLUCKED UP, EVEN FOR OTHERS BESIDE THOSE.
—Alexander’s four generals divided the Grecian territory at his death, and indeed went toward the four winds of heaven. They became kings of the north, south, east and west.
—Now, in most of the succeeding verses of Daniel 11, the angel Gabriel portrays the strife between the divided kingdoms of Greece, and the Roman conquests which followed.
—For a study of the maps, and additional historical data, see the SDA Bible Commentary, (Washington D.C., Review and Herald Publishing Association, 1955), Volume IV, pp. 823, 824, 866-872.
AND THE KING OF THE SOUTH SHALL BE STRONG,
—The southern part of the Grecian empire included Egypt, and Ptolemy was the first king of the south.
      —AND ONE OF HIS PRINCES;
Page 41

—Seleucus I, the neighboring general to Ptolemy, who was fighting for control of the eastern portion of Alexander’s kingdom, was having difficulties with a rival general. Seleucus placed himself under the command of Ptolemy, and together they defeated Demetrius, the son of Antigonus, at Gaza in 312 B.C.
—(From the time of Alexander’s death in 323 B.C., until the battle of Ipsus in 301, there was an intense struggle for dominance among the generals. But by 301 B.C. four definite divisions emerged.)
—The victory of Seleucus in Gaza was just the beginning of his success. He soon rose to greater strength than Ptolemy.
AND HE SHALL BE STRONG ABOVE HIM, AND HAVE DOMINION; HIS DOMINION SHALL BE A GREAT DOMINION.
—Seleucus I turned to his northwest borders and fought with Lysimachus, who occupied the territory above him. Lysimachu was killed, and the Seleucid empire absorbed most of his territory (Macedonia became a part of the western division. )
—Thus the eastern and most of the northern territories were united in one empire by Seleucus in 281 B.C., and Seleucus was known as the king of the north.
—It is most important to watch
          —the changing boundaries closely, and
—notice who the angel Gabriel describes as “king of the north,’ even though it is ancient history.
—The king of the north figures in modern prophecy, too. Therefore, to understand present-day prophecy, we must determine what, territory is the king of the north territory, the last time the angel refers to the king of the north in ancient history.

The Grecian Kingdom was Divided into Four Kingdoms in 301 B.C.
Grecian Kingdom divided into four kingdoms about B.C. 300
Page 42

—The king of the north of today will use his authority within the boundaries of the same territory as the king of the north in ancient history. Let us follow closely as Gabriel continues his explanation.
—Seleucus I was in charge of the northern kingdom until his death in 280 B.C. His territory reached from the Hellespont to northern India. His posterity continued in control of most of this territory for a time, but there were continual wars between the kings of the north and the kings of the south.
—The grandson of Seleucus I was named Antiochus II, and he reigned from 261-246 B.C.
AND IN THE END OF THE YEARS
—of fighting between the kings of the north and south —
THEY SHALL JOIN THEMSELVES TOGETHER; FOR THE KING’S DAUGHTER OF THE SOUTH SHALL COME TO THE KING OF THE NORTH TO MAKE AN AGREEMENT:
—Bernice, the daughter of the Egyptian king, Ptolemy II, was united in marriage to Antiochus II of the northern kingdom. This was in an effort to make peace after a long and costly war.
—The former wife of Antiochus II was named Laodice. However, Bernice took priority over Laodice after her arrival from Egypt.
BUT SHE
      —Bernice —
SHALL NOT RETAIN THE POWER OF THE ARM: NEITHER SHALL HE
—Antiochus II, the king of the north —
STAND, NOR HIS ARM: BUT SHE SHALL BE GIVEN UP, AND THEY THAT BROUGHT HER, AND HE THAT BEGAT HER,

In 280 B.C. Alexander’s Empire had Three Principal Kingdoms:
Alexander's Empire had three principal kingdoms
Page 43

AND HE THAT STRENGTHENED HER IN THESE TIMES.
—Lacdice arranged to have Antiochus II and Bernice killed along with their infant son.
—Then Seleucus II, son of Antiochus II and Laodice, became the next king of the north, and ruled from 246-226 B.C.
BUT OUT OF A BRANCH OF HER ROOTS
—Bernice’s brother, Ptolemy III —the next king of the south —
SHALL ONE STAND UP IN HIS ESTATE, WHICH SHALL COME WITH AN ARMY, AND SHALL ENTER INTO THE
FORTRESS OF THE KING OF THE NORTH,
—in revenge for his sister’s death.
—Ptolemy III came into power in the southern kingdom in 246 B.C., and shortly after invaded Syria of the northern kingdom.
AND SHALL DEAL AGAINST THEM, AND SHALL PREVAIL:
—the king of the south was victorious —
AND SHALL ALSO CARRY CAPTIVES INTO EGYPT
—(This reference verifies that the king of the south is from Egypt.)
THEIR GODS, WITH THEIR PRINCES, AND WITH THEIR PRECIOUS VESSELS OF SILVER AND OF GOLD;
—It is a historical fact that Ptolemy III brought back immense booty and so-called sacred images, after this war.
AND HE SHALL CONTINUE MORE YEARS THAN THE KING OF THE NORTH.
—The Revised Standard Version says, “he shall refrain from attacking the king of the north.”
SO THE KING OF THE SOUTH SHALL COME INTO HIS KINGDOM, AND SHALL RETURN INTO HIS OWN LAND.
—However problems between the king of the north and the king of the south continued.
BUT HIS SONS
—sons of Seleucus II, king of the north— (Seleucus III, who reigned from 226-223 B.C., and Antiochus III, who was king from 223 to 187 B.C.)
SHALL BE STIRRED UP,
—to reclaim the rich booty taken by the king of the south —
AND SHALL ASSEMBLE A MULTITUDE OF GREAT FORCES: AND ONE SHALL CERTAINLY COME, AND OVERFLOW, AND PASS THROUGH:
—Antiochus III also began a campaign to take southern Syria and Palestine away from the southern kingdom.
—He captured Seleucia, the port of Antioch, in 219 B.C.
THEN SHALL HE RETURN, AND BE STIRRED UP, EVEN TO HIS FORTRESS.
—Antiochus III is not successful at this time, in getting all of the territory he wished to conquer—nor the booty he was trying to recapture.
AND THE KING OF THE SOUTH SHALL BE MOVED WITH CHOLER, AND SHALL COME FORTH AND FIGHT WITH HIM, EVEN WITH THE KING OF THE NORTH:
Page 44

—Ptolemy IV met Antiochus III at Raphia in 217 B.C. near the Palestine/Egyptian border.
AND HE
—the king of the north —
SHALL SET FORTH A GREAT MULTITUDE;
—History tell us that the army of Antiochus III numbered 62,000 infantry, 6,000 cavalry, and 102 elephants.
BUT THE MULTITUDE SHALL BE GIVEN INTO HIS HAND
—Ptolemy IV, the king of the south, is the victor at this time.
—In the battle of Raphia, Antiochus III is reported to have lost 10,000 infantry, 300 cavalry, and 4,000 prisoners.
AND WHEN HE HATH TAKEN AWAY THE MULTITUDE, HIS HEART SHALL BE LIFTED UP;
—Ptolemy IV reminds one of proud Nebuchadnezzar —
AND HE SHALL CAST DOWN MANY TEN THOUSANDS BUT HE SHALL NOT BE STRENGTHENED BY IT.
—Ptolemy IV and his queen both died mysteriously about 203 B.C., and were succeeded by a small son, age 4, named Ptolemy V.
—The king of the north, Antiochus III, took this as a golden opportunity, and again invaded Palestine. This invasion was in 201 B.C. —sixteen years after his great defeat.
FOR THE KING OF THE NORTH SHALL RETURN, AND SHALL SET FORTH A MULTITUDE GREATER THAN THE FORMER, AND SHALL CERTAINLY COME AFTER CERTAIN YEARS WITH A GREAT ARMY AND WITH MUCH RICHES. AND IN THOSE TIMES THERE SHALL MANY STAND UP AGAINST THE KING OF THE SOUTH:
—The king of the north comes into possession of Palestine in 201 B.C., and continues to have authority over it until the Romans come into power in Palestine in 63 B.C.
—Palestine was under Grecian control for 268 years: (331-63 B.C.)
—The king of the south reigned over Palestine for 130 years, and
—the king of the north ruled Palestine for 138 years.
ALSO THE ROBBERS OF THY PEOPLE
—Here the angel Gabriel is talking to Daniel about the robbers of the Jewish nation in Palestine —
SHALL EXALT THEMSELVES TO ESTABLISH THE VISION;
—From 176 to 164 B.C. there was a campaign spearheaded by Antiochus IV to exterminate the religion and culture of the Jews. The northern armies slew thousands of Jews, made slaves of others, plundered Jerusalem of its treasures, broke down the walls, and burned all the copies of the Scriptures they could find. On the altar of the temple in Jerusalem, they set up a heathen idol, and offered swine’s flesh upon it.
BUT THEY SHALL FALL.
—Rome was gradually gaining power, and had won a victory over Antiochus IV in 190 B.C., and had taken away his territory as far east as the Taurus mountains in southern Turkey.
—In 168 B.C., at the Battle of Pydna, Rome took the western part
Page 45

of Alexander’s kingdom. And near this same date, Rome warned Antiochus IV, the king of the north, to not make any more attacks on Egypt. The king of the north obeyed the Roman order, even though their Grecian kings stayed on their thrones in Palestine and Syria until 63 B.C.
—Rome also entered into an alliance with the Jewish people in 161 B.C., so the Jews would have a certain amount of protection from the Grecian powers who were trying to destroy their culture, their religion, and even their lives. Although the Grecian kings were yet on the throne in Palestine, they still respected the demands of the Roman kingdom to the west. Rome was rapidly growing in power, and had already taken away a part of their territory down to the mountains of southern Turkey.
—The angel Gabriel gives Daniel a brief summary of the king of the north now. And this is the last time that “the king of the north” is mentioned, except by pronouns, until verse 40 of Daniel 11.
SO THE KING OF THE NORTH SHALL COME, AND CAST UP A MOUNT, AND TAKE THE MOST FENCED CITES: AND THE ARMS OF THE SOUTH SHALL NOT WITHSTAND, NEITHER HIS CHOSEN PEOPLE,
—The angel is reviewing the punishment the Jewish people would receive from the king of the north.
NEITHER SHALL THERE BE ANY STRENGTH TO WITHSTAND.
—The king of the south and the Jews were powerless before him.
BUT HE THAT COMETH AGAINST HIM
—the Roman powers that attacked the Grecian king of the north —
SHALL DO ACCORDING TO HIS OWN WILL, AND NONE SHALL STAND BEFORE HIM:
—The Grecian king of the north, in the holy land, fell before the Roman general, Pompey —in 63 B.C.
AND HE SHALL STAND IN THE GLORIOUS LAND,
—Roman generals would be in control of Palestine
WHICH BY HIS HAND SHALL BE CONSUMED.
—Thus ends the Grecian dynasty of 268 years in Palestine. Rome takes control of the holy land, and becomes the next king of this part of the northern kingdom.
—(Rome does not take control of the territory occupied by the king of the south until 30 B.C.)
HE SHALL ALSO SET HIS FACE TO ENTER WITH THE STRENGTH OF HIS WHOLE KINGDOM, AND UPRIGHT ONES WITH HIM; THUS SHALL HE DO:
—There was a fair agreement between the new king of the north, and the king of the south.
—Ptolemy XI placed his two children, Cleopatra and Ptolemy XII, under the guardianship of Rome before he died, in 51 B.C.
AND HE
—Ptolemy XI, the king of the south —
SHALL GIVE UNTO HIM
—the new king of the north, (the Roman general) —
Page 46

THE DAUGHTER OF WOMEN, CORRUPTING HER:
—In 48 B.C. Cleopatra became the mistress of Julius Caesar who had invaded Egypt.
BUT SHE SHALL NOT STAND ON HIS SIDE, NEITHER BE FOR HIM.
—Her interests remained with her father’s kingdom—the kingdom of the south.
AFTER THIS SHALL HE
—the new Roman conqueror, Julius Caesar
TURN HIS FACE UNTO THE ISLES, AND SHALL TAKE MANY:
—Another meaning of “isles” is “sea coasts.” Julius Caesar invaded the coastlands of Africa, Syria and Asia Minor.
BUT A PRINCE FOR HIS OWN BEHALF SHALL CAUSE THE REPROACH OFFERED BY HIM TO CEASE; WITHOUT HIS OWN REPROACH HE SHALL CAUSE IT TO TURN UPON HIM. THEN HE SHALL TURN HIS FACE TOWARD THE FORT OF HIS OWN LAND:
      —he returned to Rome —
BUT HE SHALL STUMBLE AND FALL, AND NOT BE FOUND.
—Julius Caesar stumbled and fell, at his assassination in 44 B.C.
—After his death, it became evident that Cleopatra would “not stand on his side, neither be for him.” The heir to the throne was her stepson Octavian—later called Caesar Augustus. But Cleopatra fell in love with Mark Anthony, who was trying to take the throne away from Octavian. In A.D. 31, Octavian defeated the combined forces of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, in the battle at Actium.
—Cleopatra later committed suicide, and when she died, the Ptolemaic dynasty ended.
—Rome was in control of the entire Grecian kingdom.
THEN SHALL STAND UP IN HIS ESTATE A RAISER OF TAXES IN THE GLORY OF THE KINGDOM:
—It was Caesar Augustus who followed Julius Caesar.
—The inspired record says: “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, and that the world should be taxed.” Luke 2:1.
BUT WITHIN A FEW DAYS HE SHALL BE DESTROYED, NEITHER IN ANGER, NOR IN BATTLE.
—Caesar Augustus died peacefully in his bed in A.D. 14.
AND IN HIS ESTATE SHALL STAND UP A VILE PERSON,
—Tiberius, a man not loved by his people —
TO WHOM THEY SHALL NOT GIVE THE HONOR OF THE KINGDOM: BUT HE SHALL COME IN PEACEABLY, AND OBTAIN THE KINGDOM BY FLATTERIES.
—Tiberius was the stepson of Augustus, and he came to the throne through the influence of his mother, Livia. Tiberius was king of the Roman Empire from A.D. 14-37.
AND WITH THE ARMS OF A FLOOD SHALL THEY BE OVERFLOWN FROM BEFORE HIM, AND SHALL BE BROKEN;
Page 47

YEA, ALSO THE PRINCE OF THE COVENANT.
—Jesus, the Prince of the covenant, was “broken on Calvary’s hill during the reign of Tiberius.
—He was “broken” by those He came to save!
AND AFTER THE LEAGUE
      —of supposed friendships —
MADE WITH HIM
      —the Roman emperors —
HE SHALL WORK DECEITFULLY:
—Rome did not always live up to her agreements with her provinces.
FOR HE SHALL COME UP, AND SHALL BECOME STRONG WITH A SMALL PEOPLE.
—The Romans often imposed the burdens of conquests on her smaller allies, and then absorbed them all into her great empire.
HE SHALL ENTER PEACEABLY EVEN UPON THE FATTEST PLACES OF THE PROVINCE; AND HE SHALL DO THAT WHICH HIS FATHERS HAVE NOT DONE, NOR HIS FATHERS’ FATHERS; HE SHALL SCATTER AMONG THEM THE PREY, AND SPOIL, AND RICHES:
—The plunder of conquest was often distributed generously among the offices, and even the common soldiers would receive grants of land in the territories they conquered.
YEA, AND HE SHALL FORECAST HIS DEVICES AGAINST THE STRONG HOLDS, EVEN FOR A TIME.
—There were no strongholds that could stand up to the pressures of the invincible armies of Rome.
—Rome is also forecasting devices against all strongholds until the time when her power shall be brought to an end.
—(“. . . He shall come to his end, and none shall help him. And at that time shall Michael stand up . . .” Daniel 11:45; 12:1.)
—The angel Gabriel now gives Daniel a brief summary of Roman history, describing first the final battle of Actium, between Augustus and Anthony.
AND HE SHALL STIR UP HIS POWER AND HIS COURAGE AGAINST THE KING OF THE SOUTH WITH A GREAT ARMY; AND THE KING OF THE SOUTH SHALL BE STIRRED UP TO BATTLE WITH A VERY GREAT AND MIGHTY ARMY; BUT HE SHALL NOT STAND:
—The king of the south —the last of the Grecian kingdoms— falls before the Roman power.
—Rome is now king of both the north and the south.
FOR THEY SHALL FORECAST DEVICES AGAINST HIM. YEA, THEY THAT FEED ON THE PORTION OF HIS MEAT SHALL DESTROY HIM, AND HIS ARMY SHALL OVERFLOW: AND MANY SHALL FALL DOWN SLAIN.
AND BOTH THESE KINGS’ HEARTS SHALL BE TO DO MISCHIEF, AND THEY SHALL SPEAK LIES AT ONE TABLE; BUT IT SHALL NOT PROSPER:
FOR YET THE END SHALL BE AT THE TIME APPOINTED (Emphasis added.)
Page 48

—The angel Gabriel assures Daniel that God is watching the timeclock, and He will allow the earthly kingdoms and powers only a certain length of time. Then the end will come, and God will set up His eternal kingdom.
—God “doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay His hand. . . .” Daniel 4:35.
THEN SHALL HE RETURN INTO HIS LAND WITH GREAT RICHES; AND HIS HEART SHALL BE AGAINST THE HOLY COVENANT; AND HE SHALL DO EXPLOITS, AND RETURN TO HIS OWN LAND. AT THE TIME APPOINTED HE SHALL RETURN, AND COME TOWARD THE SOUTH; BUT IT SHALL NOT BE AS THE FORMER, OR AS THE LATTER.
—Christ is the “Prince of the covenant.” (See verse 22.) This covenant is the glorious plan of salvation, offered, to repentant sinners who believe in Him.
—One of the chief enemies of this “holy covenant” during the time of Roman power, was the Emperor Constantine. He professed to be converted to Christianity, but he brought with him into the church many heathen customs and practices. He was trying to unite the different factions of his empire into one religion.
—Constantine tampered with the fourth commandment of God’s holy law, by making the first decree of Sunday observance in 321.
FOR THE SHIPS OF CHITTIM SHALL COME AGAINST HIM:
—probably invaders from the Mediterranean coastlands who helped break up the western Roman empire into divisions.
THEREFORE HE SHALL BE GRIEVED, AND RETURN AND HAVE INDIGNATION AGAINST THE HOLY COVENANT: SO SHALL HE DO; HE SHALL EVEN RETURN, AND HAVE INTELLIGENCE WITH THEM THAT FORSAKE THE HOLY COVENANT.
—Political powers confer with pseudo-religious powers, who have forsaken the holy covenant. Consideration is given to that “little horn” of Daniel 7:25, who is to “speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws. . . .”
AND ARMS SHALL STAND ON HIS PART,
—He will use political force to carry on the profane work of those who have forsaken the holy covenant.
THEY SHALL POLLUTE THE SANCTUARY OF STRENGTH,
      —the heavenly sanctuary —
AND SHALL TAKE AWAY THE DAILY SACRIFICE,
—by instituting a false system of confessing sins, and by presenting a false mediator between God and man.
AND THEY SHALL PLACE THE ABOMINATION THAT MAKETH DESOLATE.
—Desolation will be the portion of all who partake in this abominable substitution of using a false mediator, instead of looking in faith to the living Redeemer, who gave His life for the sins of the world.
Page 49

AND SUCH AS DO WICKEDLY AGAINST THE COVENANT
—the holy agreement by which God offers salvation —
SHALL HE
—the little horn power, or the papacy which grew out of the Roman kingdom, (See Daniel 7:23-25)
CORRUPT BY FLATTERIES:
      —by smooth teachings.
—“What they [those who are wise in their own conceit] desire is a method of forgetting God which shall pass as a method of remembering Him. The papacy is well adapted to meet the wants of all these. It is prepared for two classes of mankind, embracing nearly the whole world
—those who would be saved by their merits, and
—those who would be saved in their sins.
Here is the secret of its power.” GC 572. (Emphasis added.)
BUT THE PEOPLE THAT DO KNOW THEIR GOD
—and His Son Jesus Christ, who is their true Mediator
SHALL BE STRONG, AND DO EXPLOITS.
—By the grace of God, they will fulfill their special commission of witnessing for Jesus.
—Examples of God’s “strong” people are the Waldenses, the Albigenses, and the Reformers.
—“And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in [thy] weakness . . .” 2Corinthians 12:9.
AND THEY THAT UNDERSTAND AMONG THE PEOPLE SHALL INSTRUCT MANY:
—Even in times of persecution, the gospel story is carried,
—by the life, and by the tongue.
YET THEY SHALL FALL BY THE SWORD, AND BY FLAME, BY CAPTIVITY, AND BY SPOIL, MANY DAYS.
—In the prophecy of Revelation 13, we learn that papal supremacy would “continue forty and two months,” or 1260 years: “The periods here mentioned—‘forty and two months,’ and ‘a thousand two hundred and threescore days’—are the same, alike representing the time in which the church of Christ was to suffer oppression from Rome. The 1260 years of papal supremacy began in A.D. 538, and would therefore terminate in 1798. (See Appendix note for page 54.) At that time a French army entered Rome and made the pope a prisoner, and he died in exile. Though a new pope was soon afterward elected, the papal hierarchy has never since been able to wield the power which it before possessed.’ GC 266. (Study Revelation 13 in Chapter 5.)
—During these “many days” of the 1260 years, and even before, millions of martyrs gave their lives for the Redeemer they loved. Their burning desire was to be true to His holy covenant and law.
—(Persecutions are yet future, also. Study Chapter 4 on literal time.)
NOW WHEN THEY SHALL FALL, THEY SHALL BE HOLPEN WITH A LITTLE HELP.
Page 50

—“And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.” Revelation 12:16. (See Chapter 5.)
—Faithful leaders of the Reformation were also raised up by God to encourage His faithful sufferers.
—BUT MANY SHALL CLEAVE TO THEM WITH FLATTERIES.
—Satan has his agents on the field to discourage God’s people.
AND SOME OF THEM OF UNDERSTANDING SHALL FALL, TO TRY THEM, AND TO PURGE, AND TO MAKE THEM WHITE,
—“Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” James 1:3, 4.
EVEN TO THE TIME OF THE END: BECAUSE IT IS YET FOR A TIME APPOINTED.
—The first time of the end began in 1798.
“At that time [1798] the pope was made captive by the French army, the papal power received its deadly wound, and the prediction was fulfilled, ‘He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity.’” GC 439; Revelation 13:3, 10.
—Did the “deadly wound” give permanent damage to the papacy? No. “. . . And his deadly wound was healed . . .” Revelation 13:3.
AND THE KING
—(The papal power is called “king.”)
SHALL DO ACCORDING TO HIS WILL; AND HE SHALL EXALT HIMSELF, AND MAGNIFY HIMSELF ABOVE EVERY GOD,
—“In a passage which is included in the Roman Catholic Canon Law, or Corpus Juris Canonici, Pope Innocent III declares that the Roman pontiff is ‘the vicegerent upon earth, not of a mere man, but of very God . . .” Appendix GC 679.
AND SHALL SPEAK MARVELOUS THINGS AGAINST THE GOD OF GODS,
—“With blasphemous presumption, they openly claimed the power of creating God, the Creator of all things . . . Papal priests pretended, by their senseless mummery, to convert the simple bread and wine into the actual ‘body and blood of Christ.’” By Cardinal Wiseman, The Real Presence of the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Eucharist, Proved From Scripture, lecture 8, sec. 3, par. 26. —GC 59.
AND SHALL PROSPER TILL THE INDIGNATION BE ACCOMPLISHED:
—until Jesus returns to tread “the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.” Revelation 19:15.
FOR THAT THAT IS DETERMINED SHALL BE DONE.
—God’s purposes and time-charts are sure.
NEITHER SHALL HE REGARD THE GOD OF HIS FATHERS,
      —the Creator of the universe
NOR THE DESIRE OF WOMEN,
      —honors celibacy —
Page 51

NOR REGARD ANY GOD: FOR HE SHALL MAGNIFY HIMSELF ABOVE ALL.
—“Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, strewing himself that he is God.” 2Thessalonians 2:4.
BUT IN HIS ESTATE SHALL HE HONOUR THE GOD OF FORCES:
      —uniting churchcraft with statecraft
AND A GOD WHOM HIS FATHERS KNEW NOT SHALL HE HONOUR WITH GOLD, AND SILVER, AND WITH PRECIOUS STONES, AND PLEASANT THINGS.
—Listen to God’s words from His holy law:
“Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God. . . .” Exodus 20:3-5. (Emphasis added.)
THUS SHALL HE DO IN THE MOST STRONG HOLDS WITH A STRANGE GOD, WHOM HE SHALL ACKNOWLEDGE AND INCREASE WITH GLORY: AND HE SHALL CAUSE THEM TO RULE OVER MANY, AND SHALL DIVIDE THE LAND FOR GAIN.

—Now we have reached a dividing point in Daniel’s prophecy:
      —Up to Daniel 11:39, we have been studying history;
—from Daniel 11:40 and on, we will look into the future.

The Second Time of the End:
AND AT THE TIME OF THE END
      —when the “words” of the prophecy, spoken of m Daniel 12:4, are to be understood;
—and when “many shall be purified, and made white, and tried,” at the time of the shaking and the latter rain, (Daniel 12:10)
—there is to be a new crisis between the kings of the north and south.
—(At the first time of the end —in 1798: book of Daniel was opened. See GC 356; Daniel 12:4.
And also at the first time of the end, the papal power of Revelation 13 received a deadly wound. See Revelation 13:3; GC 439, 266.)
—What is to happen at the opening of the second time of the end?
—And at the time of the end
SHALL THE KING OF THE SOUTH PUSH AT HIM:
—The “him” refers to the papacy —the power who magnifies “himself above every god.” Verses 36, 37.
—Who is the king of the south, after the passing of many centuries? He is still the power who influences the people of the land of Egypt.
—During the French revolution of the eighteenth century, the atheism existing in France was associated with the condition of spiritual Egypt. See Revelation 11:8; GC 269; Chapter 4.
Page 52

—“Of all nations presented in Bible history, Egypt most boldly denied the existence of the living God and resisted His commands. . . . This is atheism . . . .”GC 269. (Emphasis added.)
—“And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice. . . . I know not the Lord. . . .” Exodus 5:2.
—At this second time of the end, there is to be a “push” of atheism against Catholicism.
—But it is only a “push“—not a deathblow. And the “push” is followed by an unholy union.
—The “woman” of Revelation 17 is riding on the beast from the bottomless pit. See Revelation 17:3, 8; Chapter 4.
—The papacy continues until the kingdom of Christ is set up. See Daniel 7:25-27; 8:23-25; 2:44; Revelation 13:3, 10.
—Satan is going to unite all of his forces in the time of the end. See Revelation 16:13.
“The line of distinction between professed Christians and the ungodly is now hardly distinguishable. Church members love what the world loves and are ready to join with them, and Satan determines to unite them in one body and thus strengthen his cause by sweeping all into the ranks of spiritualism. Papists, who boast of miracles as a certain sign of the true church, will be readily deceived by this wonderworking power; and Protestants, having cast away the shield of truth, will also be deluded. Papists, Protestants, and worldlings will alike accept the form of godliness without the power, and they will see m this union a grand movement for the conversion of the world and the ushering in of the long-expected millennium.” GC 588, 589. (Emphasis added.)
—(For further details on the “push,” study Chapter 4, entitled, “Time Prophecies Given to John and Daniel.”)
AND THE KING OF THE NORTH SHALL COME AGAINST HIM LIKE A WHIRLWIND, WITH CHARIOTS, AND WITH HORSEMEN, AND WITH MANY SHIPS: AND HE SHALL ENTER INTO THE COUNTRIES, AND SHALL OVERFLOW AND PASS OVER.
—Who is the king of the north at this time?
He is still the one who influences the people who live m the territory formerly held by the Grecian king of the north.
—Through the years there have been many different rulers over this territory, and also changing boundaries.
—How much of the territory is included now in this prophecy of Daniel 11:40?

Brief History of the King of the North:
1. Immediately following Alexander’s death, in 323 B.C., various generals fought for power, and boundaries shifted rapidly But by 301 B.C., there were definitely four divisions as had been prophesied. (See Daniel 7:6; 8:8, 21, 22.)
2. After these four divisions were set up, Lysimachus was the one who occupied the most northern part of Alexander’s empire.
Page 53

He ruled over the northern part of Asia Minor, (which is now the north part of Turkey,) and Thrace, (which is now Bulgaria.) However, his kingdom only lasted 20 years. In the narration by the angel Gabriel to Daniel, the expression “king of the north” is not used until after his kingdom has been destroyed and divided. See Daniel 11:6.
3. During the first 20 years, (after Alexander’s kingdom was divided into four parts,) Seleucus occupied the southern part of Asia Minor, (which is now the southern part of Turkey,) and Syria, Mesopotamia, Babylonia, and land to the east.
4. In the year 281 B.C., Seleucus defeated and killed Lysimachus, and took the southern part of Thrace and most of Asia Minor from him.
5. The angel Gabriel first uses the expression “king of the north” in Daniel 11:6. At that time, the king of the south gave his daughter in marriage to the king of the north, who was Antiochus II, grandson of Seleucus I. Antiochus II reigned from 261-246. During those years, the king-of-the-north territory was north of Egypt and Palestine.
6. Even though the Seleucids later lost all but Syria, their kingdom expanded toward the south Eighty years after Seleucus added to his northern boundary, his descendants turned southward. In the year 201 B.C., the new king of the north, Antiochus III, invaded and absorbed Palestine.
7. Palestine remained in the Grecian king-of-the-north territory for 138 years —until the Romans came into power in 63 B.C.
8. Rome became the new king of the north. (Actually, Rome began absorbing the Seleucid empire as early as 190 B.C.—taking first the most westerly lands, to the Taurus mountains. But it was not until 63 B.C. that Rome came into actual control of Syria and Palestine.)

What territory did the king of the north occupy, the last time the angel Gabriel refers to him as the king of the north? (before verse 40.) Daniel 11:15, 16:
—“So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand. But he that cometh against him [Rome, that comes against the Grecian king of the north] shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him; and he shall stand in the glorious land [Palestine], which by his hand shall be consumed.”
—At the time of verses 15 and 16, the king of the north is in Palestine. The angel calls him the “king of the north” while he is occupying the holy land, for it is against “him” (the king of the north), that the Roman power comes against—before Rome stands in the holy land.
—In verse 19, we see Julius Caesar stumbling and falling; and in verse 20, Caesar Augustus, the “raiser of taxes” is described. Rome is definitely in power at the time of verses 19 and 20, and is in charge of the northern territories, including Palestine, the glorious land.
—Therefore, when the king of the north is mentioned in Daniel 11:40, he would be one who had influence over the same area as the previous king of the north —the area including Palestine.
Page 54

The King of the North in the Second Time of the End:
—Let us look at Daniel 11:40 again: “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him. . . .”
      —We have considered:
—the king of the south, representing the atheism of Egypt; and
—the king of the north, influencing the people of Palestine; and
—the first “him” —the king who would “magnify himself above every god” —the papacy.
—Who is the second “him”? Who is it that the king of the north comes against in this second time of the end?
—There are at least two possibilities—and regardless of the one you choose, the end results are the same.
—If the second “him” is the king of the south, (the more likely) the king of the north and the king of the south would be quarreling with each other. The king of the north would be the papacy. He would be returning the shove (push) which was given to him by the king of the south at the beginning of the second time of the end. But their differences are patched up as Satan unites his forces in the last great crisis.
—If the second “him” is the papacy, (the more unlikely) both the king of the south and the king of the north would be pushing against him. The king of the north would be someone beside the papacy, until the point of time that the papacy enters Palestine with his tabernacles. (See verse 45.)
But all powers will join the devil’s threefold union.
—To try to decide exactly who the second “him” is may be premature, and certainly does not alter the meaning of the final message which is being portrayed in this fourth outline of history.
—Daniel 11:45 and 12:1 say regarding the papacy:
“. . . Yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him. And at that time shall Michael [Jesus] stand up . . .”
—The message of this fourth chart is the same as the other three outlines of history:
—God’s everlasting kingdom will soon be set up.
—Jesus will soon be revealed —face to face— to His people!

—Let us continue with Daniel 11:41:
HE
      —definitely the papacy here —
SHALL ENTER ALSO INTO THE GLORIOUS LAND,
      —Daniel 11:45 tells us:
AND HE SHALL PLANT THE TABERNACLES OF HIS PALACE BETWEEN THE SEAS IN THE GLORIOUS HOLY MOUNTAIN.
—And when the papacy enters Palestine with his tabernacles, he will certainly be the king of the north then, (even if not before with his influence and his teachings.)
Page 55

AND MANY COUNTRIES SHALL BE OVERTHROWN: BUT THESE SHALL ESCAPE OUT OF HIS HAND, EVEN EDOM, AND MOAB, AND THE CHIEF OF THE CHILDREN OF AMMON.
—Some will accept God’s messages, and not be influenced by heresy.
HE
      —the papacy —
SHALL STRETCH FORTH HIS HAND ALSO UPON THE COUNTRIES: AND THE LAND OF EGYPT SHALL NOT ESCAPE.
—Papal doctrines will pervade Egypt also.
—“. . .And all the world wondered after the beast.” Revelation 13:3.
BUT HE SHALL HAVE POWER OVER THE TREASURES OF GOLD AND OF SILVER,
AND OVER ALL THE PRECIOUS THINGS OF EGYPT:
AND THE LIBYANS AND THE ETHIOPIANS SHALL BE AT HIS STEPS.
      —to do his bidding.
BUT TIDINGS OUT OF THE EAST AND OUT OF THE NORTH SHALL TROUBLE HIM:
—What are tidings out of the east which will trouble the papacy?
—When the angel Gabriel comes out of the east the first time, (in Revelation 7:1-3), he calls to the four angels who are standing on the four corners of the earth, to hold the four winds of strife a little longer —until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads. When Gabriel comes back again —no doubt from the east— he will then tell the four angels to let the winds of strife loose. These tidings from the east will trouble the king of the north in that final moment of time, when Michael is to stand up.
—What are tidings out of the north, which will trouble the papacy in that last remnant of time?
—God’s temple is on Mount Zion—and Mount Zion lies on the “sides of the north.” (Psalm 48:2.) (Lucifer once aspired to “sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north.” Isaiah 14:13.) When Jesus, who has been interceding in God’s temple, on the sides of the north, throws down the golden censer, and prepares for the seven last plagues, these tidings will also trouble the papacy.
THEREFORE HE SHALL GO FORTH WITH GREAT FURY TO DESTROY, AND UTTERLY TO MAKE AWAY MANY.
—There will be a time of great persecution.
AND HE
—the papacy, who has had his capital at Rome —
SHALL PLANT THE TABERNACLES OF HIS PALACE BETWEEN THE SEAS IN THE GLORIOUS HOLY MOUNTAIN;
      —in Jerusalem —
YET HE SHALL COME TO HIS END, AND NONE SHALL HELP HIM.
—“But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.” Daniel 7:26.
—This is the end of all earthly kingdoms. God’s kingdom comes next.
Page 56

Daniel 12.
AND AT THAT TIME
—when the papal power comes to his end, and
—when he has planted the tabernacles of his palace in Jerusalem —
SHALL MICHAEL STAND UP, THE GREAT PRINCE WHICH STANDETH FOR THE CHILDREN OF THY PEOPLE:
—Jesus, the great Prince, who has been mediating for God’s people in the sanctuary, shall leave this beautiful temple, and prepare for the battle of Armageddon.
AND THERE SHALL BE A TIME OF TROUBLE, SUCH AS NEVER WAS SINCE THERE WAS A NATION EVEN TO THAT SAME TIME:
—“When He leaves the sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants of the earth. . . . The restraint which has been upon the wicked is removed, and Satan has entire control of the finally impenitent. God’s long-suffering has ended. The world has rejected His mercy, despised His love, and trampled upon His law. The wicked have passed the boundary of their probation; the Spirit of God, persistently resisted, has been at last withdrawn. Unsheltered by divine grace, they have no protection from the wicked one. Satan will then plunge the inhabitants of the earth into one great, final trouble. As the angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds of human passion, all the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be involved in ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old.
—“A single angel destroyed all the firstborn of the Egyptians and filled the land with mourning . . . The same destructive power exercised by holy angels when God commands, will be exercised by evil angels when He permits. There are forces now ready, and only waiting the divine permission, to spread desolation everywhere. GC 614. (Emphasis added.)
—What will be seen when the “restraining Spirit of God shall be wholly withdrawn from the wicked, no longer to hold in check the outburst of human passion and satanic wrath”?
—“The world will then behold, as never before, the results of Satan’s rule.” GC 37. (Emphasis added.)
—This period of Satan’s rule is to last five months. See Revelation 9:5-11, and Chapter 6.
AND AT THAT TIME
—during the seven last plagues and the battle of Armageddon —
THY PEOPLE
—Gabriel is still talking to Daniel about God’s people —
SHALL BE DELIVERED,
—“Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways . . . A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.Psalm 91:9-11, 7. (Emphasis added.)
Page 57

—Who is to be delivered during the great time of trouble?
EVERY ONE THAT SHALL BE FOUND WRITTEN IN THE BOOK
—The book of life is the heavenly registry of God’s children who have accepted PARDON as a gift. (Those who refuse heaven’s gracious gift, eliminate themselves from God’s family record; they will not be delivered from this great time of trouble.)
AND MANY OF THEM THAT SLEEP IN THE DUST OF THE EARTH SHALL AWAKE,
SOME TO EVERLASTING LIFE, AND SOME TO SHAME AND EVERLASTING CONTEMPT.
—This refers to the special and the general resurrections, which take place just before and at the time of the second coming of Christ.
—“For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the Archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.” 1Thessalonians 4:16.
—“Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him: and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him . . .” Revelation 1:7; See GC 637.
AND THEY THAT BE WISE
      —the margin says “teachers” —
SHALL SHINE AS THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE FIRMAMENT;
      —in God’s eternal kingdom —
AND THEY THAT TURN MANY TO RIGHTEOUSNESS AS THE STARS FOR EVER AND EVER.
—“Precious will heaven be to those who have been faithful in the work of saving souls.” COL 373.
—“Let those who are as stars in the hand of Christ remember that they are ever to preserve a sacred, holy dignity. They are Christ’s representatives . . . Through them His light is to shine forth . . . As they make God their dependence, He will give them His brightness to reflect to the world.” 6T 413, 414. (Emphasis added.)
  Gabriel’s Parting Words to Daniel:
—We have come to Gabriel’s summary.
—Daniel has received four great outlines of history, which all point to the great climax —the setting up of God’s eternal kingdom, and the Revelation of Jesus Christ face to face!
—But for whose special benefit were these guideposts given?
—What was Daniel told to do with this divine insight which was given to him 2500 years ago—which even he did not understand?
—Listen to the commission Gabriel gives to Daniel:
BUT THOU, O DANIEL,
      SHUT UP THE WORDS,
      AND SEAL THE BOOK,
EVEN TO THE TIME OF THE END.
—These four great visions have been saved as a special heritage for God’s people who are living in the last days.
—They are love messages to inspire them with faith and courage for the conflict.
Page 58

—“The light that Daniel received from God was given especially for these last days . . . The things revealed to Daniel were afterward complemented by the Revelation made to John on the Isle of Patmos. These two books should be carefully studied . . . Read Revelation in connection with Daniel. Teach these things . . .
—“When the books of Daniel and Revelation are better understood, believers will have an entirely different religious experience. They will be given such glimpses of the open gates of heaven that heart and mind will be impressed with the character that all must develop in order to realize the blessedness which is to be the reward of the pure in heart.
—“The Lord will bless all who will seek humbly and meekly to understand that which is revealed in the Revelation . . . One thing will certainly be understood from the study of Revelation —that the connection between God and His people is close end decided.” TM 113-115. (Emphasis added.)

“Shut up the Words,” and “Seal the Book.”
—Daniel was told to do two things:
—Shut up the words, and, seal the book.

The Book of Daniel was to be Opened in 1798:
—“But since 1798 the book of Daniel has been unsealed, knowledge of the prophecies has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of the judgment near.” GC 356.
—The Angel of Revelation 10 holds in His hand a little book which has been opened. It is the book of Daniel:
—“The mighty Angel who instructed John was no less a personage than Jesus Christ . . . John sees the little book unsealed. Then Daniel’s prophecies have their proper place in the first, second, and third angels’ messages to be given to the world. The unsealing of the little book was the message in relation to time.
—“The books of Daniel and the Revelation are one.
          One is a prophecy, the other a revelation;
one a book sealed, the other a book opened.”
7BC 971. (Emphasis added.)

The Words of Daniel 12 are to be Understood at the Shaking Time;
—“And He said, [Jesus talking to Daniel in verse 9,] Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
Many shall be purified, [at the time of the shaking,]
and made white, [at the time of the latter rain,]
and tried; [in the little time of trouble]
but the wicked shall do wickedly . . .” —by working against God’s fourth commandment. (Emphasis added.) See 8T 250; EW 269-271; 5T 452.
—“The words of the angel to Daniel relating to the last days were to be understood in the time of the end . . . ‘The wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.’ Dan. 12:4, 10.” DA 234. (Emphasis added.)
Page 59

MANY SHALL RUN TO AND FRO, AND KNOWLEDGE SHALL BE INCREASED.
—“The time has come for Daniel to stand in his lot. The time has come for the light given him to go to the world as never before. If those for whom the Lord has done so much will walk in the light their knowledge of Christ and the prophecies relating to Him with be greatly increased as they near the close of this earth’s history.” 4BC 1174. (Emphasis added.)
—“The end of all things is at hand. God is moving upon every mind that is open to receive the impressions of His Holy Spirit . . . Knowledge is to be increased. The messengers of Heaven are to be seen running to and fro, seeking in every possible way to warn the people of the coming judgments and presenting the glad tidings of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ The standard of righteousness is to be exalted.” ML 63. (Emphasis added.)

Jesus Himself Comes to Talk with Daniel:
THEN I DANIEL LOOKED, AND, BEHOLD, THERE STOOD OTHER TWO, THE ONE ON THIS SIDE OF THE BANK OF THE RIVER, AND THE OTHER ON THAT SIDE OF THE BANK OF THE RIVER.
AND ONE
      —Daniel —
SAID TO THE MAN CLOTHED IN LINEN,
      —Jesus —
WHICH WAS UPON THE WATERS OF THE RIVER,
—the question uppermost in his mind.
HOW LONG SHALL IT BE TO THE END OF THESE WONDERS?
—Daniel, like God’s people today, are eager
—for the strife and earthly burdens to cease,
—and for God’s eternal kingdom to be set up
AND I HEARD THE MAN CLOTHED IN LINEN, WHICH WAS UPON THE WATERS OF THE RIVER, WHEN HE HELD UP HIS RIGHT HAND AND HIS LEFT HAND UNTO HEAVEN, AND SWARE BY HIM THAT LIVETH FOR EVER THAT IT SHALL BE FOR A TIME, TIMES, AND AN HALF
—This description of Jesus, standing on the bank of the river, and on the water of the river, with His hands outstretched to heaven, is similar to what John saw some six hundred years later. (Jesus had one foot on the land and the other on the sea. Revelation 10:1-6.)
—(Daniel had been given a sealed book; John was given the same book —after it was opened.)
—The “time, times, and an half,” are a 3½ year period in connection with the events of the little time of trouble, before the seven last plagues. (Study Chapter 4 regarding the time prophecies.)
AND WHEN HE SHALL HAVE ACCOMPLISHED TO SCATTER THE POWER OF THE HOLY PEOPLE, ALL THESE THINGS SHALL BE FINISHED.
—After the persecution, comes the reward; after the cross, the crown!
Page 60

AND I
      —Daniel
I HEARD, BUT I UNDERSTOOD NOT: THEN SAID I, O MY
LORD, WHAT SHALL BE THE END OF THESE THINGS?
—“Twice Daniel inquired, How long shall it be to the end of time?” TM 114. (Emphasis added.)
AND HE SAID, GO THY WAY, DANIEL: FOR THE WORDS
ARE CLOSED UP AND SEALED TILL THE TIME OF THE END.
—God has His hand over the “words” in the final prophetic charts, so they will not be understood, until He has predicted.
—The “words” of the time prophecies of Daniel 12 are to be open in the second time of the end. (The first time of the end was in 1798.)

What Five Things are to Happen — When the “Words” are Unsealed?
[1.] MANY SHALL BE PURIFIED,
—“When purification shall take place in our ranks, we shall no longer rest at ease, boasting of being rich and increased with goods, in need of nothing.” 8T 250. (Emphasis added.)
[2.] AND MADE WHITE,
—“I asked the meaning of the shaking. . . and was shown that it would be caused by the straight testimony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to the Laodiceans . . . This testimony must work deep repentance; all who truly receive it will obey it and be purified . . .
—“They were clothed with an armor from their head to their feet . . . They had obtained the victory, and it called forth from them the gratitude and holy sacred joy . . . I asked what had made this great change. An angel answered, ‘It is the latter rain, the refreshing from the presence of the Lord, the loud cry of the third angel.’” EW 270, 271. (Emphasis added.)
[ 3.] AND TRIED;
—“It is impossible to give any idea of the experience of the people of God who shall be alive upon the earth when celestial glory and a repetition of the persecutions of the past are blended.” 9T 16.
[4.] BUT THE WICKED SHALL DO WICKEDLY: AND NONE OF THE WICKED SHALL UNDERSTAND;
—“The Sunday movement is now making its way in darkness. The leaders are concealing the true issue, and many who unite in the movement do not themselves see whither the undercurrent is tending. Its professions are mild and apparently Christian, but when it shall speak it will reveal the spirit of the dragon . . . We should search the Scriptures and be able to give the reason for our faith. Says the prophet: ‘The wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.’” 5T 452. (Emphasis added.)
[5.] BUT THE WISE SHALL UNDERSTAND.
—“As we near the close of this world’s history, the prophecies recorded by Daniel demand our special attention, as they relate to the very time in which we are living. With them should be linked
Page 61

the teachings of the last book of the New Testament Scriptures . . . The promise is plain that special blessing will accompany the study of these prophecies. ‘The wise shall understand’ (verse 10), was spoken of the visions of Daniel that were to be unsealed in the latter days . . .” PK 547, 548. (Emphasis added.)
AND FROM THE TIME THAT THE DAILY SACRIFICE SHALL BE TAKEN AWAY,
—a false system of confessing sin through a false mediator
AND THE ABOMINATION THAT MAKETH DESOLATE SET UP,
—“. . . His deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.” Revelation 13:3.
THERE SHALL BE A THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY DAYS.
—(A study of the time prophecies given to Daniel are compared with those given to John, in Chapter 4.)
BLESSED IS HE THAT WAITETH,
—amid persecution, delay and hunger —
AND COMETH TO THE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND FIVE AND THIRTY DAYS.
—A special blessing is in store for all who wait on Jesus—keeping their eyes fastened on Him during their time of trouble.
BUT GO THOU THY WAY TILL THE END BE
FOR THOU SHALT REST,
AND STAND IN THY LOT AT THE END OF THE DAYS.
      —“Thou shalt rest.”
—Daniel had been a faithful soldier for Christ through many decades, witnessing as prime minister to various rulers. Soon he was to lay down his burdens—and rest until the resurrection morning.
—“. . . But before his life labors closed, he was given the blessed assurance that ‘at the end of the days’—in the closing period of this world’s history —he would again be permitted to stand in his lot and place.” PK 547.
—“The time has come for Daniel to stand in his lot.” 4BC 1174.
—“Read the book of Daniel. Call up, point by point, the history of the kingdoms there represented. Behold statesmen, councils, powerful armies, and see how God wrought to abase the pride of men, and lay human glory in the dust. God alone is represented as great. In the vision of the prophet He is seen casting down one mighty ruler, and setting up another. He is revealed as the monarch of the universe, about to set up His everlasting kingdom—the Ancient of days, the living God, the Source of all wisdom, the Ruler of the present, the Revealer of the future. Read, and understand how poor, how frail, how short-lived, how erring, how guilty is man in lifting up his soul unto vanity . . .
—“The light that Daniel received direct from God was given especially for these last days. The visions he saw by the banks of the Ulai and the Hiddekel, the great rivers of Shinar, are now in process of fulfillment, and all the events foretold will soon have come to pass. 4BC 1166. (Emphasis added.)
Page 62

—“The agencies of evil are combining their forces and consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis. Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones.” 9T 11. (Emphasis added.)
—“Soon grievous troubles will arise among the nations—troubles that will not cease until Jesus comes. As never before we need to press together, serving Him . . . whose kingdom ruleth over all. God has not forsaken His people, and our strength lies in not forsaking Him.
—“The judgments of God are in the land. The wars and rumors of wars, the destruction by fire and flood, say clearly that the time of trouble, which is to increase until the end, is very near at hand . . . The prophecies of the eleventh of Daniel have almost reached their final fulfillment.” WM 136; similar to 9T 14. (Emphasis added.)

Much of the History of Daniel 11 IS TO BE REPEATED:
—Students of Bible prophecy, there are still broader challenges!
      —Daniel 11 has another fulfillment:
—“We have no time to lose. Troublous times are before us. The world is stirred with the spirit of war. Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the prophecies will take place. The prophecy in the eleventh [chapter] of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment. Much of the history that has taken place in fulfillment of this prophecy will be repeated. In the thirtieth verse a power is spoken of that ‘shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.
—“‘And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.
—“‘And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvelous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done’ [Dan. 11:30-36.]
—“Scenes similar to those described in these words will take place. We see evidence that Satan is fast obtaining the control of human minds, who have not the fear of God before them. Let all read and understand the prophecies of this book, for we are now entering upon the time of trouble spoken of.” (Daniel 12:1-4 quoted.) Letter 103, 1904; RH July 8, 1976. (Emphasis added.)
Page 63

—As we watch for the thrilling unfolding of the second fulfillment of Daniel 11, let us humbly pray for God’s Spirit to guide us into additional truth for our crisis hour.
—And as we look back upon this book of prophecy, we may realize, to a small degree, its depth of meaning.
—Let us determine to help Daniel “stand” in his ‘lot” —by living his message before our neighbors.
—Let us combine his testimony, with that of John’s, and present them to the world, with courage, with conviction, and with certainty.
—“A careful study of the working out of God’s purpose in the history of nations and in the revelation of things to come, will help us to estimate at their true value things seen and things unseen, and to learn what is the true aim of life. Thus, viewing the things of time in the light of eternity, we may, like Daniel and his fellows, live for that which is true and noble and enduring. And learning in this life the principles of the kingdom of our Lord and Saviour, that blessed kingdom which is to endure for ever and ever, we may be prepared at His coming to enter with Him into its possession.” PK 548. (Emphasis added.)
—“The history of nations that one after another have occupied their allotted time and place, unconsciously witnessing to the truth of which they themselves know not the meaning, speaks to us . . . The history which the great I AM has marked out in His word, uniting link after link in the prophetic chain, from eternity in the past to eternity in the future, tells us where we are today in the procession of the ages, and what may be expected in the time to come. All that prophecy has foretold as coming to pass until the present time, has been traced on the pages of history, and we may be assured that all which is yet to come will be fulfilled in its order.” Ed 178. (Emphasis added.)
